STEPPINGLEY ST LAWRENCE WAR MEMORIAL

The brass memorial is on the wall of the St. Lawrence Church, Steppingley.  It takes the form of a brass plaque with a painted stone surround; the stone surround is mounted above a cherubs head. It gives the name, date of joining and date of death of the six men who gave their lives. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here.

Pte. 17710.  2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.  Joined 9 November 1914.  Killed in action Saturday 25 September 1915.  Age 23.  Born and lived Steppingley.  Enlisted Bedford.  Son of Charles & Elizabeth Battams of 36 Dukes Cotts., Steppingley, Bedfordshire.  Commemorated on   Loos Memorial, Pas-de-Calais, France. Ref. Panel 41.

BRIGHTMAN

Herbert

Pte G/60786.  24th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, City of London Regiment.  Joined 11 May 1916.  Killed in action Thursday 28 March 1918.  Born Steppingley.  Lived Ampthill.  Enlisted Luton.  Commemorated on   Mesnil Communal Cemetery Extension,  Somme, France.  Ref. I.A.9.

GIBBONS

Harry

Corporal 17743, 4th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment formerly 76192, Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). Killed in action 27 September 1918. Aged 23. Born Maldon, Essex, resident Steppingley, Bedfordshire, enlisted Bedford. Son of Jesse and Caroline Gibbons, of Steppingley, Bedfordshire. Buried in MOEUVRES COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Nord, France. Plot VI. Row A. Grave 25. See also Maldon, Essex

Serjeant 25675.  4th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.  Joined 26 January 1916.  Killed in action Tuesday 30 October 1917.  Age 24.  Born Haynes, Bedfordshire. Lived Boreham Wood, Herts.  Enlisted Bedford.  Son of David & Kate Norris of Flitwick Lodge, Flitwick, Bedfordshire.  Commemorated on   Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.  Ref. Panel 48 to 50 & 162A.

ROGERS

Tom (Thomas)

L/Cpl 17712.  2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.  Joined 9 November 1914.  Died of wounds  Wednesday 12 July 1916.  Age 34.  Born Budleigh Salterton, Devon.  Lived Ampthill.  Enlisted Bedford.  Husband of Fanny Rogers of 24 Steppingley, Ampthill, Bedfordshire.  Commemorated on   Dive Copse British Cemetery, Somme, France.  Ref. II.E.13.

WARNER

Hector Stanley

Pte. 242223.  1st/5th Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts & Derbys Regiment).  Joined 29 September 1916.  Killed in action Thursday 17 October 1918.  Age 20.  Born and lived Steppingley.  Enlisted Luton.  Son of Mrs. H. Warner of 31 Rectory Road, Steppingley.  Commemorated on   Busigny Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France.  Ref. IV.A.12.
