The Memorial is embedded into one of the corners of the wall surrounding the church of St Nicholas and lists seven names from World War 1. Inside the church is a book with details of each of the men who died in World War 1 written and researched by Garry Thompson.

GREAT WAR, 1914-1918.


Sergeant, 3rd Labour Company, Northamptonshire Regiment transferred 432nd Agricultural Company, Labour Corps, served with 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment (1908-1917). Died on Tuesday, 3rd December 1918. Age 28. Husband of Laura Harriett Holyoak of Brook Lane, Great Barford. Buried in All Saints graveyard, Great Barford.

CHAMBERLAIN Gerald Frederick

Lance Bombardier, 123749, "D" Bty. 5th Bde., Royal Field Artillery who died on Friday, 12th July 1918. Age 23. Born Alconbury Weston, enlisted Bedford. Son of Frederick and Mary Ann Chamberlain, of Mill Farm, Riseley. Buried in Pernes British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave V. E. 27.


Private. probably Henry Gale Caress, Private, 7183, 1st Bn., Lincolnshire Regiment who was killed in action on Monday, 14th September 1914. Born Pertenhall, enlisted Raunds, resident Kimbolton. Buried in Chauny Communal Cemetery British Extension, Aisne, France. Grave 5. H. 12.

CLARKE Fred[erick]

Private possibly Frederick Clark, Private, 48635, 12th Bn., Royal Fusiliers who was killed in action on Tuesday, 19th June 1917. Age 27. Born Wellingborough, enlisted Rushden. Son of Frederick and Elizabeth Clark, of Wellingborough, Northants.; husband of Jessie Clark, of Woodford Rd., Great Addington, Northants. Commemorated on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 6 and 8.

COLE Ernest

Private, 37049, 16th Bn., Northumberland Fusiliers who was killed in action on Monday, 3rd December 1917. Age 19. Born Bedford. Son of Thomas H. and Mary Ann Cole, of "Woodland", Swineshead. Formerly 32385, Northamptonshire Regiment. Commemorated on Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 19 to 23 and 162


Private, 27817, 1st Bn., Bedfordshire Regiment who was killed in action on Monday, 23rd April 1917. Age 24. Born and resident Swineshead, enlisted Bedford. Son of Mrs. Hackett, of Swinshead. Commemorated on Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 5.

PACKWOOD [John] Thomas

Private, 61072, 7th Bn., Royal Fusiliers who died of wounds on Wednesday, 14th February 1917. Born Swineshead, enlisted Huntingdon, resident Grafham. Formerly 48706, 101st Training Battalion. Buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Grave XXI. F. 12A.

TAYLOR Reginald James

Stoker, LT/KX 99883, H.M. Trawler Brock, Royal Naval Patrol Service who died on Wednesday, 21st August 1940. Age 21. Son of Harry and Ivy Maude Taylor, of Marston. Buried in the north-east corner of St. Nicholas churchyard, Swineshead.
