June 1943 - 161 Squadron - Halifax DG406 - MA-V
Reported lost without trace, possibly in the English Channel. Operation
PHYSICIAN 32, France.
Information
received from Francis Suttill: "My father was Major Francis
SUTTILL, organiser of the Physician circuit in France. I have been
researching all the parachute operations he organised and recently
found some more information about Operation Physician 32/Charlotte
- the latter presumably being an agent going to another circuit.
On TNA file AIR 27/1068, there is a note which says "Later
news received from a secret source to the effect that aircraft fitting
the description of DG406 was seen to be shot down in flames by ground
flak at a position in the vicinity of Beauvais which was near his
second pinpoint. Reported that first operation had been carried
out successfully."
Agents were usually taken to their drop point before containers
were dropped so it looks as though Charlotte dropped successfully.
I do not know whether the second part of the operation delivering
containers to a group near Beauvais was completed before the aircraft
was shot down.
At least something was achieved." |

August 1943 - 138 Squadron - Halifax JD180 - NF-O
Crashed at Meythet (Haute-Savoie). Operation PIMENTO 12, France.
Note
from Ian Yuille:
Halifax
JD180 - NF-O 138 Squadron. This aircraft and its crew are
commemorated in a small display in the Resistance Museum near
Thones, just below the Gliers Plateau. The museum is on the
Thones to Annecy road. We visited the cemetery at Meythet
where Sydney Congdon and Francis Pollard are buried. Meythet
is a suburb of Annecy and quite difficult to find an access
from the motorway. I understand that the remaining four crew
members were originally buried at Meythet but due to pressures
on the small cemetery they were move to their present location.
The pilot, Squadron Leader Griffiths, survived and his uniform
is the centre of the display on SOE operations to help the
Resistance. |
