March 1945 - 161 Squadron - Stirling LK209 - MA-T
Crashed in sea near Vlieland island. Operation ROWING 3, Holland.
In the early morning of 23 March 1945 the Short bomber came under
heavy fire from a German anti-aircraft battery on the island of
Vlieland, north Holland and crashed into the dunes. Five of the
seven crew died in the crash and only the pilot, Alan Aitken and
the rear gunner, Joseph White survived. Alan was found lying against
an engine with his clothes on fire and in a pretty bad way. The
rescuers took him to the local village. Joseph had jumped from the
plane just before it crashed and very fortuitously his fall was
broken by some trees; he wandered for some time and came upon the
village of Posthuis where he was greeted by the villagers. Naturally,
the Germans had seen the aircraft crash and were quickly on the
scene; they were aware that someone had survived as a red flare
had been fired. Fearing reprisals from the Germans both men were
handed over to the authorities and taken by ferry to Harlingen on
the mainland; unfortunately Alan died during the ferry crossing.
