The Chenies War Memorial is located in St Michael’s Church, off Bedford Close, Chenies. It takes the form of two rectangular plaques with wooden frames and lettering in gold. The First World War plaque was dedicated 23 October 1920 and was attended by the Bishop Suffragan of Buckingham; the maker was W. Morris, of Art Bronze Foundry; the Second World War plaque makers were Morris Singer & Co. Ltd. There are 14 names listed for World War 1 and 11 names for World War 2. The names here have been sorted into alphabeical order within conflict.

Leading Stoker K/1760, H.M.S. Indefatigable, Royal Navy. Lost with his ship at the Battle of Jutland 31 May 1916. Aged 28. SHANN Reginald Arthur

Lieutenant, 3rd Battalion attached 4th Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment. Killed in action 21 March 1918. Born 26 June 1891 in Chenies, Buckinghamshire. Son of Rev. Reginald and Elizabeth Shann. In the 1911 census he was aged 19, born Chenies, Bucks, a Student at Royal Agricultural College, boarding at Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. No known grave. Commemorated on POZIERES MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Panel 42 and 43.

Within St Michael's Church, Chenies is a memorial to him that takes the form of a large tablet set on a backboard with a triangular pediment and pilasters either side, a latin cross is above and scrolled apron below.

SHANN Reginald Arthur of the Rectory Chenies Buckinghamshire died 21 March 1918 in France or Flanders Administration London 10 May to the reverend Archibald Shann clerk. Effects £486 7s. 2d.

SHANN, REGINALD ARTHUR, Lieut. 3rd (Reserve), attd. 4th (Territorial), Battn. The East Lancashire Regt., s. of the Rev. Reginald Shann, Rector of Chenies, by his wife, Elizabeth, dau. of the Rev. E. Hoare, Hon. Canon of Canterbury and Vicar of Holy Trinity, Tunbridge Wells; b. Chenies, co. Buckingham, 26 June, 1891; educ. The Abbey School, Beckenham, 1901-5; Tonbridge School, 1906-8, where he was a member of the O.T.C., and the Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, 1909-11, from where he passed out with honours; was training for Land Agency; volunteered for active service soon after the outbreak of war, and enlisted in the 18th (Public Schools Battn.) Royal Fusiliers 3 Sept. 1914; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 14 Nov. 1915; was recommended for a commission, and, returning to England for training, was gazetted 2nd Lieut. 3rd East Lancashire Regt. 7 July, 1916; promoted Lieut. Jan. 1918; joined the 1st Battn. in France 14 Nov. 1916; was wounded at Arras 9 April, 1917, and invalided home; on recovery, returned to France, where he was attached to the 4th Battn. Sept. 1917; had short leave in Jan. 1918, then rejoined 9th Battn., and was killed in action near Hargicourt 21 March, 1918. Buried where he fell; unm.

Cannot locate any Military records. Died at The Emergency Hospital, Amersham, 6 May 1942. Aged 26. Born 27 March 1916 in Hendon Registration District, Middlesex. Resident Rookwoood, Church Grove, Little Chalfont, Amersham, Buckinghmahsire. In the 1939 Register he was single, a Dental Surgeon L.D.S.R.C.S., son of Ernest T and Lilian E Clarkson, resident Rockwood Church Grove, Little Chalfont, Amersham R.D., Buckinghamshire.

CROOK John Lionel

Aircraftman 2nd Class 3032911, 3 Radio School, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve (Technical Training Command). Died 12 December 1944. Aged 19. Native of Amersham, Bucks. Son of John Oliver and Phyllis Mary Crook, of Amersham. Based at Compton Bassett, Wiltshire. Buried in CHENIES (ST. MICHAEL) CHURCHYARD EXTENSION, Buckinghamshire.

In St Michaels Church is a pedestal type bookstand with plain supporting lip commemorating him. The base has a quatrefoil calex above a stepped collet at the junction, and an incurring rectangular stepped foot on four ball feet with the inscription on the back of the stem.

Also commemorated within St Michael's Church, Chenies on a large hammered brass alms dish with plain edge inset on a wide border; mounded rim; deeply stepped bouge and slightly domed centre with an inscription on the border.

HOPKINSON Richard Adrian

Flying Officer (Pilot) 70324, 57 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Killed in action flying a Blenheim IV, serial number R3750, out of Lossiemouth, Moray, when the aircraft was shot down by a Bf109 over North Sea during a raid on Stavanger airfield, Norway, 9 July 1940. Aged 24. Son of Martin and Christine Hopkinson, of Bovingdon, Hertfordshire. B.A. (Oxon.). WRIGHT Gilbert
probably Gilbert Francis Montcreiff WRIGHT, Flying Officer (Pilot) 90265, 605 Squadron, Royal Air Force (Auxiliary Air Force). Killed in action flying out of Hawkinge, Kent, in a Hurricane I, serial number L2120, he was hit by return fire when attacking a He111 during a patrol in the Arras area and crashed near Berneville 4 miles southwest of Arras22 May 1940. Aged 36. Native of Chalfont St Giles, Bucks. Son of Arthur Fitzherbert Wright and Daisy Isobel Wright; husband of Mary Doreen Wright, of Chalfont St. Giles, Buckinghamshire. CHARLES Leslie Stafford

Captain, 60th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and 6th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. Died of wounds 30 July 1916 as a Prisoner of War aged 21.; he had been on a reconnaissance, flying in a Morane BB 5193, accompanied by Lt C Williams, on 30 July 1916, when the aircraft was last seen going down, trailing smoke, over Estrees. Aged 21. Born at Stanmore, Middlesex. Son of Mr. and Mrs. R. Stafford Charles, of Woodside House, Chenies, Bucks. Buried in ROISEL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, , France. Plot II. Row L. Grave 3.

The memorial within St Michael's Church takes the form of a Trefoil altar cross. The front plates are decorated with rosettes in roundels and trefoils. The four terminals have square panels with the signs Alpha and Omega, a Flaming sword and S.M. for St Michael. The flared stepped foot stands on six flattened ball feet. There is an inscription on the front panel of the foot.
