GILBEY	John		[Spelt GILBY in Cambridge Independent Press] Sergeant 8209, 2nd Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF). Awarded the Military Medal for bravery at Hill 60, and promoted from lance-corporal to sergeant. After 22 months in the trenches he was invalided home with trench fever, but recovered. Native of Abington, and the first man of the village to receive the Military Medal. His mother lived at North Lodge, Bourne Bridge, Pampisford. Born 4 November 1889 in Abington. Attested 23 September 1914 in Valcartier, Québec, Canada, aged 24 years 10 months, height 5 feet 10 inches, chest 38½-41½ inches, medium complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair, religious denomination Church of England.
