The war memorial stands in the centre of a road junction and takes the form of a Celctic Cross on a stone plinth on which the names are inscribed. The names are listed for both World War 1 and World War 2 with surname, initials, rank and service descriptions. There are 52 names for World War 1 and 43 names for World War 2. The memorial was first unveiled 5 March 1921 by Colonel Sir Sourtney Vyvyan. The names within each conflict have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease fo reading.

AN IMPRESSIVE CEREMONY.

Those present at the unveiling ceremony of the War Memorial on Saturday afternoon, will never have effaced from their memories the impressiveness and solemnity of the scene, and the reverence which marked it. The memorial itself honours alike the heroes whose names it commemorates, and the town and district which made its erection possible.

It takes the form of a Celtic cross, of splendid and noble proportions, on a tall octagonal shaft, with canopied octagonal base in dressed granite, and stands in the large open space at the foot of Mount Pleasant Hill. the side facing the Hayle main road is panel inscribed:

In honour the brave men who
went from Hayle and gave their lives
in their country's cause the Great War, 1914-1919.

The unveiling ceremony was cairried out the presence of relatives the fallen, who were given a place of honour, representatives of public bodies, Territorials, ex-service V.A.D., and very large crowd of the general public.

Cecil
345883, Private, 16th (Royal Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Hayle in 1896, the son of William George and Mary (Nee Andrewartha) Andrews of Ventonleague. He enlisted in Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 3 December 1917, aged 21, and is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Grave No F.12 Israel & Palestine (incl Gaza).

BAILEY

George Dennis
J/25429, Leading Signaller, Royal Navy – HMS Vivid. Born in Hayle on 25 February 1898, the son of Samuel John and Kate (Nee Harvey) Bailey of 27 Mount Pleasant, Hayle. He enlisted in Devonport on 2 June 1916, for 12 years. He was discharged on 31 March 1926, and died on 5 May 1926 from Pulmonary Tuberculosis aged 27, while living in Weymouth, Dorset.

8325, Private, 2nd Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Hayle in 1887, the elder brother of George, above. He enlisted in Dartmouth. He was Killed in Action on 1 July 1916, aged 29, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier & Face 1C, France.

BAILEY

Samuel John
Engineer, Merchant Marine – SS Falaba. Born in Gwithian in 1862, the son of Samuel William and Elizabeth Ann (Nee Uren) Bailey. Husband of Kate and the father of George and Samuel above. While enroute to join another ship in Africa, the SS Falaba was torpedoed and sank 38 miles West of the coast of Gabon, Africa, he drowned aged 52.

James Wilfred
21900, Corporal, 10th (Service) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (Cornwall Pioneers). Born in Kenwyn in 1889, the son of William James and Annie (Nee Bartle) Barrett and husband of Grace Ellen Barrett of 25 Commercial Road, Hayle. He was Wounded in Action (GSW left arm) and discharged on 27 September 1918. He died on 5 January 1920, aged 31,and is buried in Phillack (St Felicitas) Churchyard.

Bertie
Bristol Z/1246, Able Seaman (Gunner), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve – HMS President III. Born in Phillack on 25 April 1893, the son of Gabriel and Selina (Nee Bond) Blewett of Trevassack Court, Copperhouse, Hayle. He enlisted into the RNVR on 23 October 1915, initially joining the Royal Naval Division before being transferred to sailing on the Defensively Armed Merchant Ship (DAMS) – SS Antilochus. He died from pneumonia on 23 November 1918, aged 25, and is buried at Greenwich RN Cemetery, Grave No C.F.52.

6053, Private, 3rd Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Ivybridge, Devon in 1877, the son of William and Elizabeth (Nee Saunders) Bunker and husband of Phillippa (Nee Jenkins) Bunker of 24 St Johns Street, Copperhouse, Hayle. He enlisted in Hayle. He died in Clare Terrace Military Hospital, Falmouth from Pneumonia contracted while on active service on 2 February 1915, aged 38, and is buried in Phillack, (St Felicitas) Churchyard, Grave No B.10.4. Note: CWGC show No as 36053.

[Transcribed as E CALLAWAY] 269044, Engine Room Artificer 1st Class, Royal Navy – HMS Roebuck. Born in Hayle on 30 March 1876, the son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Nee Thomas) and husband of Mabel Jane (Nee Stephens) of 30 Mount Pleasant, Hayle. He enlisted in Devonport on 25 May 1897. He was admitted to the RN hospital at East Stonehouse, Plymouth where he died from Bronchopneumonia on 1 October 1918, aged 42, and was buried on 4 Oct 1918, in Phillack, (St Felicitas) Churchyard, Grave No D.7.5.

Edmund George
2473, Sapper, 3rd Field Company, Corps of Royal Engineers. Born in Blackfriars, Surrey in 1882, the son of Joseph Garner and Sarah Cartwright and husband of Elizabeth Ellen C (Nee Chenoweth) Cartwright of Phillack Hill, Hayle. He enlisted in Guildford, Surrey. He was Killed in action on 3 March 1915, aged 33, and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Panel 1, France.

COOMBE

William John
Lieutenant, 7th (Service) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Hayle on 6 June 1881, the son of Edwin Thomas and Mary Ann (Nee Harris) and husband of Clara (Nee Kent) Coombe of ‘Sun Villa’ Albany Road, Redruth. He enlisted into the 1st Volunteer Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry as a Bugler on 21 March 1897, later being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was Killed in action on 1 October 1916, being buried 700 yards from the village of Gueudecourt, this grave being lost. He is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier & Face 6B, France

Charles Henry
SP/3363, Private, 24th (Service) Battalion (2nd Sportsmen’s) Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment). Born in Phillack, in 1892, the son of Charles Henry and Martha (Nee Chinn) of 9 Trelissick Terrace, Hayle. He enlisted in Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 3 August 1916, aged 24. His remains were found by 113rd Labour Company and reburied of 5 July 1919, in Quarry Cemetery, Grave No III.M.6, Montauban, France.

Jacob Corin
Bristol Z/844, Ordinary Seaman, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve – HMS Invincible. Born in St Ives on 20 September 1887, the son of Margaret C Dunn and husband of Annie Beatrice (Nee Hosking) Symonds (Formerly Dunn). He enlisted in Devonport on 24 May 1915, initially joining the Royal Naval Division before being transferred to sea duty. He was Killed in Action at the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, aged 28, and commemorated on the Plymouth Naval memorial, Panel 19.

DUPEN

Arthur Phillips Leslie
Engineer Captain, Royal Navy – HMS Dreadnaught Born in South Compton, Hampshire in 1871, the son of John Wesley and Julie Ann (Nee Spray) Dupen who had lived in Hayle until her death in C1910, and husband of Florence Ada (Nee King) Dupen. He fell from a horse, fracturing his skull and died in the RN Hospital Bight on 25 December 1918, aged 47, and is buried in Malta (Capuccini) Naval Cemetery, Grave No Prot[estant] 64. Note: Several records show place/vessel as HMS Egmont which was the designation for Fort St Angelo at the time.

Cuthbert John Ernest
1535, Private, A Company, 11th Battalion, 3rd Infantry Brigade, Australian Imperial Force. Born in Hayle in 1882, the brother of Arthur above. He enlisted at Blackboy Hill, Western Australia on 5 January 1915, citing a Miss E Tredinnick as his next of kin. He was Killed in Action on 28 June 1915, aged 33, and is buried in Shell Green Cemetery, Grave No II.G.13, Turkey Incl Gallipoli).

FARQUHARSON

Henry
Master Mariner, Merchant Navy – SS Harmattan. Born in Hackney, London on 10 August 1878, the son of Henry Fudge and Eliza Sarah Farquharson and husband of Mary (Nee Paynter) then living at ‘Cringlenook’, Foundry Hill, Hayle. He joined the Merchant Navy C1893. He drowned, aged 39, when the vessel struck a mine and sank 30 miles off Cape Bon, Algeria on 5 May 1917. He is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

FORD

James Creilly Godfrey
K/8969, Leading Stoker, Royal Navy - HMS Indefatigable. Born in Camborne on 12 August 1890, the son of Francis and Clare Erswell (Formerly Ford) of Commercial Road, Hayle. He enlisted in Devonport. He was Killed in Action at the battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916, aged 26, and is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Panel 15.

GILBERT

James [Henry Ash]
34928, Private 3rd Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Hayle in 1867, the son of John and Leonora Margaretta Gilbert and husband of Bessie Branwell (Nee Lander) Gilbert. It is believed that he died while in Afton Lodge Auxiliary Hospital, Freshwater, Isle of Wight(Note) from Asthma and Pneumonia contracted on war service on 15 February 1915, aged 48, and is buried in Falmouth Cemetery, Grave No K.H.67. Note: Soldiers died in the great war 1914-1919 records shows birthplace as Freshwater, Isle of Wight and pension record documents show Mrs Lillian Gilbert of Mutton Hill, Hayle as ‘separated wife’.

GOLDSWORTHY

Thomas
Lieutenant, 9th (Service) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, attached to 5th Battalion the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Mentioned in Dispatches. Born in St Erth in 1887 the son of Thomas and Hannah (Nee Johns) Goldsworthy of Trelissick, Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 12 April 1918, aged 31, and is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Panel 6, Belgium. Note: Medal index card shows date of death as 14 April.

HARRIS

Ernest
28061, Private, 1/4th (Territorial Force) Battalion the Kings Own Scottish Borderers. Born in Hayle in 1893, the son of Henry and Jane Harris of 45 St John Street, Hayle. Be enlisted in Berwick, Northumberland. He was wounded and presumably captured on 16 July 1918 and Died (of Wounds) while a prisoner of war, on 30 October 1918, aged 24, and was buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Grave No XIII.E.1, Germany.

65016, Private, 16th (Royal Devon and Royal North Devon Yeomanry) Battalion the Devonshire Regiment. Born in Hayle on 24 February 1898, the son of Sidney and Sarah Jane (Nee Murt) Hollow of 31 King’s Street, Newton Abbott, Devon. He enlisted in Newton Abbott. He Died of wounds on 6 November 1917, aged 19, and is buried Beersheba War Cemetery, Grave No L.85, Israel & Palestine (incl Gaza).

HOSKING

William James
17626, Private, 2nd Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Hayle in 1890, the son of William and Elizabeth Banfield (Nee Thomas) Hosking of Foundry Street, Hayle. He enlisted in Bodmin. He was Killed in Action on 18 March 1915, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Panel 20, Belgium.

HUNKIN

Ernest Lewhenworth
2nd Engineer, Merchant Marine – SS Red Rose. Born in Mevagissey in 1891, the son of Samuel and Emma (Nee Brenton) Hunkin and husband of Brenda Emma (Nee Parsons0 Hunkin of Bodriggy Street, Hayle. He drowned after the vessel was torpedoed and sank about 30 miles NW of Cape Antifer on 22 May 1918. He was aged 26, and is commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London.

114632, Private, 55th Battalion the machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Born in Phillack in 1899, the son of Sarah Ann Jackson. It is believed that he originally joined the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (Regt No 202750) when he enlisted . He was Killed in Action on 6 May 1918, aged 19, and is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Panel 139 (addenda) and the MGC Memorial, London.

JENKINS

Edgar Vernon
2854, Corporal, 1st Battalion the Honourable Artillery Company (Territorial Force). Born in Cardiff on 18 April 1883, the son of Edwin and Eliza (Nee Shugg) Jenkins then of Llandaff, Wales, later Netherleigh, Hayle. He enlisted at Armoury House, London on 4 January 1914. He was Killed in Action on 19 April 1917,aged 34, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Bay 1, France. Note: CWGC show rank as Corporal. He had been a Company Sergeant Major until he voluntarily reverted in rank.

Richard Arthur
321608, Sergeant, 3rd Reserve Siege Artillery Brigade (Territorial Force), Royal Garrison Artillery. Born in Helston in 1896, the son of William and Mary Hannah (Nee Walters) Jose of Glebe Row, Phillack. He died while at Prees Heath Military Hospital, Whitchurch, Shropshire on 16 February 1919, aged 22, suffering from Influenza and Pneumonia. He is buried in Phillack (St Felicitas) Churchyard, Grave No D.7.11.

32255, Private, 7th (Service) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Phillack in 1896, the son of James Thomas and Amelia (Nee Oates) of ‘Mexico’, Phillack. He enlisted in Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 16 July 1917, aged 21, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Panel 80-82, Nr Ypres, Belgium.

3/5546, Private, 1st Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in St Erith in 1896, the son of John Thomas and Bessie (Nee Tremlett) Knight of 12 Mill Row, Hayle. He arrived in France on 10 December 1914. He was reported missing, later confirmed as Killed in action on 23 July 1916, aged 20, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Pier & Face 6B, France. Note: Pension records show regimental No as 5546.

29171, Private, 1st Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Phillack in 1890, the son of William and Mary Sarah (Nee Berriman) Love and husband of Mary Hannah (Nee Morgan) Love of 8 West Terrace, Hayle. He enlisted in Hayle. On 6 November 1917 he was wounded in Action with a gunshot wound to his right hand and shell contusion to his left foot and described as ‘walking wounded’. He was evacuated ending up in a hospital in Keithley, Yorkshire where he Died of Wounds on 28 May 1918, aged 28, and is buried in Phillack (St Felicitas) Churchyard.

285133, Corporal, 14th (Service) Battalion the Welsh Regiment. Born in Hayle in 1896, the son of Harry and Mary Anna (Nee Rothero) of Trevassack Row, Copperhouse, Hayle. He originally enlisted into the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry (Regt No 202711) before being transferred. He was wounded and gassed, and later died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis while at a hospital in Stockport, Cheshire on 28 June 1918, aged 21.

90040, Private, 1/4th (Territorial Force) Battalion the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Born in Hayle in 1899, the son of John Henry and Harriet Ann (Nee Northcott) Pearce. He enlisted in Redruth originally joining a Training Reserve Battalion (Regt No 8/7109). He was Killed in Action on 8 August 1918, aged 19, and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Panel 3, France.

Born in Phillack in 1894, the son of William Samuel and Elizabeth J (Nee Bosanko) Polkinghorne. He enlisted in Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 23 August 1918, aged 24, and is commemorated on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Panel 3, France.

Richard Leopold
931323, Private, 54th Battalion (British Columbia Regiment), Canadian Expeditionary Force. Born in Hayle on 27 May 1881, the son of Francis ‘Frank’ Harvey and Christina (Nee King) Pool of Station Villa, Hayle. He enlisted in Cranbrook, British Columbia on 28 April 1916, initially joining the 225th (Overseas) Battalion. He was Killed in Action on 7 September 1917, aged 36, and is commemorated on the Vimy Memorial, France, the Canadian Memorial, London and the Canadian Book or remembrance.

240941, Private, 1/5th (Territorial Force) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Hayle in 1891, the son of William henry and Harriet Ann Bennetts (Nee Jenkins) Popham of 3 Market Place, Hayle. He enlisted on 12 December 1915. He was Wounded in Action on 18 September 1917, discharged on 1 November 1917, subsequently dying on 7 November 1919, aged 28, and is buried in the south east part of Phillack (St Felicitas) Churchyard.

82457, Gunner, 177th Siege Batter, Royal Garrison Artillery. Born in St Kew in 1891, the son of John and Laura Mary (Nee Pascoe) Prior of ‘Dawns Cottage’, Foundry Hill, Hayle. He enlisted on 11 December 1915, stating he had previously served in the DCLI. He was Killed in Action on 6 October 1917, aged 27, and is buried in Ypres Reservoir Cemetery, Grave No I.E.83, Ypres, Belgium and commemorated on the Royal Regiment of Artillery Memorial, London

Jospeh Henry
TR7/9850, Private, 94th Training Reserve Battalion. Born in Hayle in 1899, the son of William Frederick and Florence Rosina (Nee Delderfield) Purchase of 2 Penpol Avenue, Hayle. He enlisted in Penzance. He died while at Chisledon Camp Hospital, Wiltshire on 28 March 1917, aged 18, and is buried in Phillack (St Felicitas) Churchyard, south east part, near east boundary. Note: The 94th was also known as the 16th (Reserve) Bn, the Gloucestershire Regiment and later the 274th Graduated Battalion.

[Transcribed as F S RAIL] 10707, Lance Corporal, D Company, 1st Battalion the Royal Welsh Regiment. Born in Phillack in 1892, the son of William Charles and Grace (Nee Moyle) Rail of 1 Caroline Row, Ventonleague. He enlisted in Falmouth. He was Killed in Action on 16 May 1915, aged 23, and is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, Panel 13 & 14, France.

REED

Norman Samuel John
[Transcribed as S J N REED] 4833, Private 1/1st (Buckinghamshire) Battalion, the Oxford and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry. Born in Ludgvan in 1891 the son of John Richards and Helen (Nee Hosking) Reed of Chapel Terrace, Hayle, later 2 Orchard Villas, Lelant. He enlisted in Hayle. He died from Diphtheria on 29 March 1917, and is buried buried at Heilly Station Cemetery, Grave No VI.D.26, Mericourt-L’Abbe, France, and commemorated on his parent’s grave in St Uny Churchyard, Lelant. Note: The dependant’s pension card shows his first names as Samuel John Norman (Regt No 4833) and his mother as Ellen. CWGC have a record of S J Reed (Regt No 266897 or 4883).

[Transcribed as L W ROSEWARNE] Captain, 1/4th (Territorial Force) Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Hayle on 29 April 1888, the son of Colonel William Ernest and Charlotte Elizabeth (Nee Hooper) Rosewarne of 205, Newport Road, Cardiff. He was gazetted a 2nd Lieutenant on 17 June 1908. He was Killed in Action on 27 April 1918, aged 29, and is buried in Ramleh War Cemetery, Grave No S.57, Israel.

706453, Private, 148th Company, the Labour Corps. Born in St Just? In 1879. Husband of Caroline Ann Saundry, later living at Lower Pengegon Camborne. He was accidently drowned on 12 September 1919, aged 40, and is buried in the Ancre British Cemetery, Grave No II.B.55, Beaumont Hamel, France.

He enlisted in Bodmin originally joining the Hertfordshire Regiment (Regt No 10210). He was Killed in Action on 28 August 1918, aged 25, and is commemorated on the Artois Memorial, Panel 8-9, France. Arthur Gilbert Vivian
Lieutenant, 41st Dogras, Indian Expeditionary Force, attached to 20th Squadron, the Royal Flying Corps. Born in St Columb Minor in 1896, the son of Arthur and Siddie Vivian (Nee Pearce) Taylor, later of ‘The Beeches’, Hayle. He enlisted on 9 October 1914 joining the 2/1st Royal Devon Yeomanry (Regt No 2684) becoming a Corporal before being discharged on 9 November 1915 when he was commissioned and attending the Royal Military College. On completion he was posted to the Dogras as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was Killed in Action while flying a Bristol F2B (Tail No A7271) on 17 October 1917, aged 21, and is commemorated on the Arras Flying Service’s Memorial, France.

202174, Private, 1/4th (Territorial Force) Princess Charlotte of Wales’s (Royal Berkshire) Regiment. Bon in Phillack in 1895, the son of Robert and Eliza Catherine Trathen of Highlanes, Hayle. TREDINNICK

William Biggleston
242105, Private, 2/8th (Territorial Force) Battalion the Worcestershire Regiment. Born in Hayle in 1893, the son of William Biggleston and Jane Williams (Nee Gilbert) Tredinnick of ‘Nineveh’, Hayle. He enlisted initially joining the DCLI (Regt No 1593) before being transferred. He was reported missing on 17 January 1918, later confirmed a POW in Munster on 25 March 1918. He died on 30 May 1918, aged 25, and is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery, Grave No XVII.A.32, Germany. Note: CWGC spell surname as Tredenick. Register of Soldiers effects show POW camp as Munster.

[Transcribed as W I WHITFORD] 24339, Private, 1st Battalion the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Born in Phillack in 1896, the son of John and Margaret Williams … Whitford and husband of Pollie Williams Gilbert (formerly Whitford) of 3 Caroline Row, Ventonleague, Hayle. He enlisted in Hayle. He was Killed in Action on 18 April 1917, aged 21 and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, Panel B6, France.

Born in St Erth in 1892, the son of Peter and Amelia (Nee Whear) Woolcock and husband of Bessie Eveline (Nee Carne) Woolcock. He enlisted in Hayle. He died from dysentery and exhaustion while in East Leeds War Hospital on 28 October 1918, aged 25, and is buried in Gwithian (St Gothan) Churchyard.
