Was taken prisoner by the Japanese on 7 March 1942 when Java fell, and died of acute enteritis at Paginatan during a forced march from Sandakan to Ranau, Borneo, 15 February 1945; originally based at Kuala Lumpur, Malaya. Aged 25. Son of Hedley and Elsie Deacon of St. Stephens, Saltash, Cornwall. In the 1921 census he was living with his uncle and aunt, William and Florence Cox, aged 1, born Cornwall, son of Hedley and Elsie Deacon, resident Stockdon, Stockadon, St Mellion, Landulph, Cornwall. No known grave. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Singapore. Column 454. Extract from England & Wales Government Probate Death Index 1946:
