Family story by Claire Hallam

Jim Shugg was born in Gwinear in 1891, the son of William Thomas and Emily Shugg. He appears in the 1901 census along with his parents and 6 siblings. In 1911 he is still living with his family, now in Tuckingmill at 47, Edward Street. He was a tin miner. It appears he migrated to USA but may have crossed over to Canada to volunteer for World War 1. His attestation when he signed up cited his job as ‘miner’. He was killed in action on 1st October 1918 in France; on the official record it states: “Killed instantly by machine gun bullets during the attack north of Cambrai”. His death is also recorded on the Commonwealth War Graves web page and on the Canada War Veterans Virtual Memorial at https://www.veterans.gc.ca/en. He is buried in Sancourt British Cemetery in Northern France.

His name, along with that of his older brother, William, killed earlier the same year, is inscribed on the war memorial in All Saints’ churchyard, Tuckingmill.
