GWYTHERIN WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial can be found in the parish churchyard, Gwytherin and takes the form of a plain obelisk on a square plinth, with two steps. surrounded by railings. The inscription and names are on the front of the plinth. There are seven names listed for World War 1.

Private 81762, 10th combined Field Ambulance, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died in Egypt 24th October 1918. Born Gwytherin, enlisted Rhyl, resident Corris. Buried in ALEXANDRIA (HADRA) WAR MEMORIAL CEMETERY, Egypt. Section A. Grave 212.

DAVIES

William Thomas

Private 53005 [SDGW] or 53605 [CWGC], 1st Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action 30th March 1917. Aged 19. Born Doifrwynog, enlisted Llanrwst, resident Gytherin. Son of Thomas and Winnifred P. Davies, of Ty Bont, Rhyd Lanfair, Bettws-Y-Coed, Carnarvonshire. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 6.

EDWARDS

Private 35811, 14th Battalion, South Wales Borderers. Died in United Kingdom 5th April 1916. Born Llanwrst, enlisted Wrexham. Buried between the Church and Mortuary in SS. ELERI AND JAMES CHURCHYARD, GWYTHERIN, Denbighshire.

Son of Thomas and Mary Jones, of Cerrigellgwm, Yspytty If an, Bettws-y-Coed, Caernarvonshire. Buried in BAGHDAD (NORTH GATE) WAR CEMETERY, Iraq. Plot XX. Row C. Grave 14.

Lance Corporal 19377, 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died 9th October 1918. Aged 24. Born Gwytherin, enlisted Denbigh. Son of Peter and Anne Roberts, of Ty Cornel, Gwytherin, Llanrwst, Denbighshire. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.) and clasp. Buried in BEAULENCOURT BRITISH CEMETERY, LIGNY-THILLOY, Pas de Calais, France. Ploy I. Row A. Grave 14.

Private 12238, 8th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action at Gallipoli 20th August 1915. Born Gwytherin, enlisted Wrexham. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAL, Turkey. Panel 77 to 80.
