BARLBOROUGH
WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 &
2 - Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Mick Peck & Louis Mills 2021
There
are two memorials within St James the Greater Church Memorial Garden
Barlborough, one for World War 1 and the other for World War 2. A
further plaque is to be found on the south wall of the aisle of the
church listing those who died in World War 1. The internal memorial
within the church is in the from of a wall mounted, mottled grey,
marble tablet. The tablet has a segmental pediment at the head, surmounted
by a moulded cornice. The main section has tapered rebated sides and
a recessed central panel bearing the names. There are 29 names listed
of the fallen from Barlborough village who are in two columns, separated
by a vertical line. Three further names are added for the fallen of
Barber's Row, two at the foot of the main columns and one below the
quotation. The incised inscription is in mainly upright capital Roman
lettering coloured black. The tablet is supported by two moulded brackets.
There are 32 names listed for World War 1. Thye memorial gardens are
in the form of an oblong plot of land laid out to lawns with a central
path leading to a circular bed containing shrubs and war memorials.
The plot also contains benches, trees and further shrubs and is bounded
by coniferous hedges. There is a grey granite tablet on a sandstone
backboard at the north end of the gardens on the north side of the
road commemorating those from World War 1. The upright oblong tablet
has the names of the fallen in two columns, 32 names in all plus a
VC winner at the foot. The incised inscription and names are in upright
Roman lettering coloured gold, the names in capitals and the text
in sentence case. In the same location is another grey granite tablet
reclining on a concrete backboard commemorating ten men from World
War 2. The upright format oblong tablet has the incised inscription
in upright lettering coloured gold, the names in Roman capitals and
the text in sentence case Gothic style. Ten names are listed. The
three names on the Barber Row Memorial are marked '†'.

AWARD |
GREAVES,
VC |
Fred |
Corporal,
Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment).
First man in Derbyshire to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Born
16 May 1890 in Killamarsh, Derbyshire. He was 27 years old,
and an acting corporal in the 9th Battalion, The Sherwood Foresters
(The Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment) when, during the
Battle of Broodseinde, he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Victoria
Cross Citation:
No.
23715 Actg. Cpl. Fred Graves, Notts. & Derby. R. (Balborough).
For
most conspicuous bravery, initiative and leadership, when
his platoon was temporarily held up by machine-gun fire from
a concrete stronghold. Seeing that his platoon commander and
serjeant were casualties, and realising that unless this post
was taken quickly his men would lose the barrage, Cpl. Graves,
followed by another non-commissioned officer, rushed forward
regardless of his personal safety, reached the rear of the
building and bombed the occupants, killing or capturing the
garrison, and taking four enemy machine-guns.
It was solely due to the personal pluck, dash and initiative
of this non-commissioned officer that the assaulting line
at this point was not held up, and that our troops escaped
serious casualties.
Later in the afternoon, at a most critical period of the battle,
when the troops of a flank brigade had given way temporarily
under a heavy counter-attack and when all the officers in
his company were casualties, this gallant non-commissioned
officer quickly grasped the situation. He collected his men,
threw out extra posts on the threatened flank, and opened
up rifle and machine-gun fire to enfilade the advance.
The effect of Cpl. Greaves' conduct on his men throughout
the battle cannot be over-estimated, and those under his command
responded gallantly to his example.
