GRINDLEFORD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed Information
Details kindly supplied by GENUKI Derbyshire - Rosemary Lockie
Copyright © Rosemary Lockie 2001

The Memorial is a Celtic Cross set on a series of tapering square plinths, surrounded by a low retaining wall and railings. It is located at the old centre of the village - the village green, adjacent to the Methodists' Chapel and opposite the Sir William Hotel. The Parish Council plan to have the memorial renovated this year (2001) as the stones have become encrusted with algae from the nearby cypressus trees. The inscriptions on the memorial contain rank, forenames, surname, date of death and age for each man and cover both World Wars. The names for World War 1 have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading.
