ABBOTTSBURY WAR MEMORIAL

The Abbotsbury War Memorial takes the form of a 2.4 metre high Celtic style granite cross situated in the churchyard of the parish church of St. Nicholas and just to the right of the main gate. The memorial consists of a square granite base surmounted by a square tapering granite plinth bearing the names of 13 lives lost in the First World War.

Edwin Louis

Captain Edwin Louis Benbow M.C. 85th Sqdn. Royal Air Force (formerly Royal Field Artillery). Born Abbotsbury, Dorset. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Benbow, of La Mortola, Ventimigila, Italy. Killed in action near Ypres 30th May 1918. Aged 22. Buried in Grave IV. F. 31. Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery, Belgium. (Also commemorated on a brass plaque within the church)

260223 (250223 on SDGW) Private Frederick Chard. 2/6th Btn. Royal Warwickshire Regiment. (formerly 203794 Somerset Light Infantry). Born Bradpole, Dorset. Enlisted Weymouth, Dorset. Son of Mrs. C. Chard, of 8, Diment Square, North Allington, Bridport; husband of Alice Hunter (formerly Chard), of H.M. Coastguard Station, Abbotsbury, Dorset. Killed in action 24th September 1917. Aged 28. Buried in Grave IV. B. 44. Brown’s Copse Cemetery, Roeux, France.

CHURCHILL

276990 Petty Officer Stoker Fred Churchill. H.M.S. "Ghurka". Royal Navy. Son of Joseph and Mary Ann Churchill, of Red Lane, Abbotsbury, Dorset. Died 8th February 1917 when the destroyer H.M.S. Ghurka hit a German mine and sunk off Dungeness. (Only 5 crew survived). Aged 41. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 26, Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

George Walter Mundy

178738 Ship’s Corporal 1st Class George Walter Mundy Corbon. H.M.S. "Invincible. Royal Navy. Husband of Elizabeth Mary Watson Corbon, of West St., Abbotsbury, Dorset. Killed in action 31st May 1916 when the battle cruiser "Invincible" was sunk at Jutland. (Of the crew of 1,032 only 6 survived). Aged 38. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 21, Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

Walter Miller

10914 Private Walter Miller Cribb. 6th Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment. Born Abbotsbury, Dorset. Enlisted Weymouth, Dorset. Resided: Abbotsbury. Husband of Alice Beale (formerly Cribb), of West St., Abbotsbury, Weymouth. Killed in action 16th May 1917. No known grave. Commemorated on Bay 6, Arras Memorial, France.

Wilfred

K/2030 Petty Officer Stoker Frederick Dunford. H.M.S. "Fortune", Royal Navy. Son of John and Emily Dunford, of Rodden Row, Abbotsbury, Dorset. Killed in action 31st May- 1st June 1916 when the destroyer H.M.S. "Fortune" was sunk at Jutland. Petty Officer Dunford was one of 67 crew who died. Aged 28. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 16, Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

304107 Petty Officer Stoker John Dunford. H.M.S. "Black Prince", Royal Navy. Son of John and Emily Dunford, of Rodden Row, Abbotsbury, Dorset. Killed in action 31st May 1916 when the cruiser H.M.S. "Black Prince" was sunk at Jutland. Petty Officer Dunford was one of 857 crew members who died. Aged 30. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 16, Portsmouth Naval Memorial.

10926 (10928 on SDGW) Corporal Frederick Charles Toms. 5th Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment. Born Abbotsbury, Dorset. Enlisted Weymouth, Dorset. Resided: Abbotsbury. Son of Charles T. and Lucy Toms, of Rosemary Lane, Abbotsbury, Dorset. Killed in action 14th June 1917. Aged 21. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 37, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

J/87647 Ordinary Seaman Sydney George Towills. H.M.S. "Powerful", Royal Navy. Son of Henry George and Maria Towills, of West St., Abbotsbury, Dorset. Died 2nd July 1918. Age 18. Buried in Grave in South West part of Abbotsbury (St Nicholas) Churchyard.

3490 (3400 on SDGW) Private Walter George Trevett. 1/4th Btn. Dorsetshire Regiment. Enlisted Dorchester, Dorset. Died 3rd November 1916. Buried in Grave VI. L. 15. Basra War Cemetery. Iraq.

294115 Stoker 1st Class William John Vivian. H.M.S. "Eglantine", Royal Navy. Son of Joseph and Sarah Vivian, of West St., Abbotsbury, Weymouth, Dorset. Died 31st May 1918. Aged 37. Buried in Grave P212, Belfast City Cemetery.

697 Private Reginald Frank Weeden (Weedon on SDGW). Dorset (Queen’s Own) Yeomanry. Born Buckland Newton. Enlisted Gorwall. Resided: Abbotsbury, Dorset. Son of Frank and Annie Weeden, of "Eureka," Dorchester Rd., Radipole, Weymouth. Killed in action 21st August 1918. Age 20. No known grave. Commemorated on Panel 17 & 18, Helles Memorial, Turkey.
