The Ashen War Memorial can be found on the outside of St Augustine’s Church, Ashen. It takes the form of a stone inlaid as part of the buttress of one of the external; walls of the church.

Private 1877, 1st/5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 21 August 1915. Born Wixoe, Essex, enlisted Clare, Suffolk. Buried in AZMAK CEMETERY, SUVLA, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Plot I. Row B. Grave 19.

PEACOCK

Albert

Private 126428, 19th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died of wounds 30 March 1918. Born Ashen, enlisted Sudbury, resident Clare, Suffolk. Son of Albert and Julia Peacock, of Pannals Ash, Ashen, Essex. Buried in GENT CITY CEMETERY, Oost-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot/Row/Section B. Grave 8.

SWALLOW

Walter

Private 1878, 1st/5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Killed in action at Gallipoli 15 October 1915. Aged 20. Born Spring End, Suffolk, enlisted Clare, Suffolk. 7TH FIELD AMBULANCE CEMETERY Buried in 7TH FIELD AMBULANCE CEMETERY, Turkey (including Gallipoli). Plot IV. Row C. Grave 2.

TWITCHETT

Ernest [E]

Lance Corporal 8623, 2nd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. Killed in action 6 January 1915. Aged 24. Born and resident Clare, Suffolk, enlisted Haverhill. Son of Thomas and Emma Twitchett, of Ashen, Essex. No known grave. Commemorated on LE TOURET MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Panel 8 and 9.

TWITCHETT

[Thomas] James

Private 31865, 13th [SDGW] or 6th [CWGC] Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 28 April 1917. Born and resident Ashen, enlisted Clare, Suffolk. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Guardsman 14681726, 1st Battalion, Grenadier Guards, Died 23 September 1944. Aged 22. Son of Bertie and Dorothy Kate Bowers, of Ashen, Essex. Buried in UDEN WAR CEMETERY, Noord-Brabant, Netherlands. Plot 3. Row I. Grave 7.

PEACOCK

Percy Harold

Private 5828681, 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died as a Japanese Prisoner of War 20 June 1943m while working on the Thailand-Burma Railway. Aged 23. Son of Joseph Lewis Peacock and Ena Peacock, of Ashen. Essex. Buried in CHUNGKAI WAR CEMETERY, Thailand. Plot 2. Row N. Grave 8.
