GREAT HOLLAND (ESSEX) - Roll of Honour

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards & Andy Pay 2004
additional information Simon Walls

All Saints Church Great Holland, plaques in church. The memorial is in the form of a drinking fountain, erected opposite the Church School (bombed in WWII) in The Street (now Rectory Road) after the Great War. The memorial contains an inscription but not the names of the men, which are on the brass tablet in the church. The inscription refers only to the Great War, the last line is elegible but the rest reads:

This Drinking Fountain was
Erected as a Memorial of the
Great War 1914-1918
and in memory of all who fought
and worked to obtain
Victory.
A Bronze Tablet in the Parish Church
Records the Names of the Men of
this Village who gave their Lives
for their Country.
Peace was signed June 28th 1919.

As a foot note to this

In addition to those who died in battle and had their names recorded, many died afterwards as a result of what they had suffered. Poor (in every sense of the word) Mrs. Woods, a widow living in an old cottage by the Village Hall, had three sons in their late teens and early twenties. All returned home but all died within two years. Sad it is that their names, and those of others like them, are not recorded.
