Captain,
9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. Killed in action 25 September 1915.
Born 5 April 1884, birth registered in Kensington Registration District,
London. Son of Montagu Edward and Lydia Margaret Hughes-Hughes,
of Leez Priory, Chelmsford. Late of Hertford College, Oxford. M.A.,
and of the Inner Temple, Barrister-at-Law. Buried in BROWN'S ROAD
MILITARY CEMETERY, FESTUBERT, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. Row

THE GLORY OF GOD Extract from Du Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, part two, page 175: HUGHES-HUGHES, WILLIAM MONTAGU, Capt., 9th (Service) Battn. The Welch Regt., elder s. of Montagu Edward Hughes-Hughes. of Leez Priory, Chelmsford, co. Essex. by his first wife, Lydia Margaret, dau. of John James Rowe, of Liverpool; b. London, 5 April, 1884 educ. Tonbridge School, and Hertford College, Oxford (First Class Jurisprudence. 1907), and was called to the liar (Inner Temple) in 1909. He joined the Inns of Court O.T.C. in 1907, and on the outbreak of war applied for a commission, and was gazetted 2nd Lieut. 9th Welch Regt. 12 Sept. 1914, and promoted Capt. 9 Nov. following : went to France in July, 1015, and was killed in action north of Givenchy during the Battle of Loos, 25 Sept. following. Buried at Festubert. His Colonel wrote: “I am most grieved to tell you that your son has been killed while most gallantly leading his company in an assault on a desperately strong position. He was shot through the head before he had gone 50 yards and killed instantaneously. We were able to recover his body at night and he is buried at Festubert. Your son was a splendid, keen, hard-working and capable officer, and was very largely responsible for the high state of efficiency which the battalion attained, and he is a very great loss to us. He was always the greatest help to me, and I can't tell you how 1 shall miss him." Unm. |

resident Great Leighs. Buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel and

Mrs. M. Livermore, near The Church, Little Leighs, Chelmsford. In
the 1911 census he is aged 25, married to Margaret with two sons,
a Horseman on farm, born Little Leighs, resident with his family
and mother-in-law near the Church, Little Leighs. Buried in CEMENT

In the 1901 census he was aged 16, the son of William and Catherine
Mansfield, a Stockman on Farm. born White Notley, resident Great
Leighs. In 1911 his mother had died, he was aged 26. a farmer's
Son working on farm, born White Notley, resident Great Leighs. No
known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen,

11, son of Thomas and Jane Nicholls, born Little Leighs, resident

No further information currently available, all J PARKE's on SDGW
do not fit. The 7 on the CWGC do not seem to fit either. Cannot
find a relevant death military or civilian for J PARKE between 1914
and 1921. there are 65 PARK surnames with J in the intials somewhere
on SDGW but none of these fit. Cannot find anything matching on
the 1901 or 1911 census nor in the births and baptisms. There was
a James Cecil PARKE, who served in the Leinster Rifles as a Captain
then as a Major, 6th Battalion, Essex Regiment but he lived in Llandudno. |

1914. Aged 26. Born and resident Little Leighs, enlisted Warley.
Son of Charles and Eliza Searles, of Little Leighs, Chelmsford,
Essex. His brother James Henry Searles also fell (see below). In
the 1901 census he was aged 12, son of Charles and Eliza Searles,
Yard Boy on Farm, born Little Leighs, resident with his family Little
Leighs. on 27 June 1906, aged 18, he attested for 4th Battalion,
Essex Regiment, service number 825. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY,

16415 [CWGC] or 16115 [SDGW], 9th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire
Regiment. Killed in action 6 September 1916. Aged 19. Born and resident
Chelsmford, enlisted London. Son of Charles and Eliza Searles, of
Little Leighs, Chelmsford. His brother Fredrick Searles also fell
(see above). Birth registered in the Jan-Mar Quarter 1897 in the
Chelmsford Registration District. In the 1911 census he was aged
14, son of Charles and Eliza Searles, a Domestic House Boy, born
Little Leighs, resident with his family near Warren Farm, Little
Leighs. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, son of Charles and Eliza
Searles, born Little Leighs, resident with his family Little Leighs.
No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France.
