ASSOCIATED
EQUIPMENT COMPANY LTD, WALTHAMSTOW WAR MEMORIALs
World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Gill Cannell and Andrew Dishman 2019
There are
two memorials both Bronze plaques with gold lettering in wooden frames
that are currently located in the London Bus Museum at Brooklands
Museum, Weybridge, Elmbridge, They were originally housed in Walthamstow
Associated Equipment Co. Ltd. (A.E.C.). According to a plaque within
the museum:
The
Memorial Plaque sited on the left side of this notice was almost certainly
originally located in the AEC vehicle factory at Walhamstow, London
E17, where the named employees who died in the Great War (retrospectively
named World War 1) would have worked.
In 1925, however, AEC purchased a 59 acre site from the Earl of Jersey
at Southall, Middlesex for £25,000. That site bounded by Windmill
Lane, the Great Western Railway main line to Bristol and a branch
line from Southall to Brentford, was used to accommodate a new vehicle
factory, replacing the Walthamstow plant. The Memorial Plaque then
travelled across London to the new premises, as did many of the Company's
workers.
The matching second Plaque, on the right, was then produced to remember
AEC's employees who were killed during World War 2.
The Southall factory was closed in 1979 and subsequently demolished.
Someone had the foresight to remove the Memorial Plaques, which were
then placed in a nearby social club, until offered to and accepted
by this Museum in 2013.
