PONTARDAWE
WAR MEMORIALS
World War 1 &
2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Sue James 2008
Extra research Martin Edwards
The
memorials for Pontardawe are to be found in two places.
The
first is a four sided memorial on the corner of Herbert Street and Holly
Street, with base, middle and top tier. Top tier has the Inscription,
middle tier has the names of the men killed in each war. On top of the
3 tiers is an obelisk, which has a cross carved into the West face (side
facing towards the West) with a small plaque underneath, which reads
“EIN GOGONEDDUS FEIRWON.” (“Our Glorious Dead”).
WWI plaques are on the West face, WWII plaques are on the South face.
there are 107 names listed for World War 1 and 56 names listed for World
War 2. In 1985 the bronze plaque holding the inscription was replaced
as it had become damaged. The memorial was originally unveiled 21st
July 1921, the designer was Ernest E Morgan.
The
second covers World War 1 only and takes the form of carvings in the
doors of St Peter's Church, Pontardawe. The same 70 names exist on this
memorial as the main memorial although order and spelling differ somewhat.
These idionsyncracies are higlighted below.
The
names below have been ordered alphabetically for ease of reading and
research, they do not appear in this order on the memorial.

War Office letter (68/Albert/109/A.G.10) records the following:-
"On
1st March, 1917, this non-commissioned officer, with a total disregard
for his own personal safety and solely prompted by the desire to
save his comrades, rushed to pick up a live bomb which had been
thrown by a Private and which struck the parapet and rolled back
into the trench near Lieutenant Roe and the Private. Sergeant Healy,
fearing the party could not escape in time, made a most gallant
attempt to seize and hurl the bomb from the trench. It exploded,
however, and mortally wounded him. This was the last of Sergeant
Healy's many acts of gallantry and devotion to duty. He was previously
awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal and the Military Medal and
later a bar to his Military Medal.". |

This
soldier, presumably a Williams was ‘reported missing, presumed dead’,
but returned home after 4 years in France having suffered from loss
of memory.

"DEAD"
MAN RETURNS.
Stoker
Whose Name is on a War Memorial.
After
an absence of eight years a stoker has returned to his home at Pontardawe,
Swansea Valley. He had been mourned as dead, and his name appears
on the Pontardawe War Memorial unveiled last September. He states
that he was a long time in hospital, and remembers little of later
stages of the war. He is still suffering from shell shock.

MOURNED
AS DEAD.
A
PONTARDAWE WAR HERO RETURNS HOME..
Stoker
Glyn Williams left Pontardawe in the early stages of the war and
joined the Navy. Nothing had been heard of him since until he returned
to Pontardawe last week.
He
served on a couple of boats during the war which were torpedoed,
and he had been reported missing and presumed to be dead. His name
was accordingly included in the list of the 104 names which appear
on the Pontardawe war memorial. His return to Pontardawe has caused
considerable surprise locally. He is staying at present with his
grandfather, Mr. Samuel Williams, at Llwynderi, Pontardawe. His
mother died a few years back, whilst his father only proceeded to
the States three months ago.
Williams
has spent a good deal of time in hospital, and since the termination
of the war he has visited Russia, Canada, Palestine, and other countries.
He is suffering from nervous breakdown and shock, and has been ordered
to take complete rest.
