AYOT ST PETERWAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located ouytside St peters Church, Ayot St Peter Road, Ayot St peter, Hertfordshire. It takes the form of a probable Gothic memorial with a resemblance to an Eleanor Cross with shields on each face; it was unveiled in 1919. One face contains the inscription and three faces list those who died. There are 20 names in total for World War 1 only, the name has the rank and regiment/service for each man. The names have been sorted into alphabetical order here for ease of reading and research.

BUTTERFIELD Stanley George
Private 1421, 13th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action 8 July 1916 [19 July on SDGW]. Aged 21. Born, resident and enlisted Welwyn, Herts. Son of the late James and Eliza Butterfield, of Ayot Green, Welwyn, Herts. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 8 C 9 A and 16 A.

Private 201424, 4th Battalion (Territorials), Essex Regiment formerly 6313, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action in Palestine 27 March 1917. Aged 26. Born and resident Ayot St. Peter, Herts, enlisted St. Albans. Son of George Ellis, of Ayot St. Peter's, Welwyn, Herts; brother of John Ellis (below). No known grave. Commander, H.M.S. Dartmouth, Royal Navy. Admitted to Convalescent Home being seriously ill 1 January 1916; reported seriously ill 9 January 1916; died 7 February 1916. Aged 40. Born 18 January 1876. Enrolled in the Navy 15 January 1890. Son of the Rev. Canon Henry Jephson and Mrs. J. S. Jephson, of Ayot St. Peter, Herts. Served in the Persian Gulf (1912-14). In the 1881 census he was aged 5, born Ayot St Peter, hertfordshire, son of Henry and Jane Susan Jephson, resident The Rectory, Ayott [sic] St Peter, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1891 census he was aged 15, born Ayot St Peter, hertfordshire, a scholar, son of Henry and Jane S Jephson, resident The Rectory, Ayott Green, Ayot St Peter, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 35, unmarried, born Ayot St Peter, Hertfordshire, Executive Commander, aboard H.M.S. Challenger. Lieutenant 30 June 1898, Commander 31 December 1909.Buried in NICE (CAUCADE) COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Alpes-Maritimes, France. Grave 83.

[Memorial lists him as Sergeant] Chief Motor Mechanic 1688, 7th Squadron, Royal Air Force. Died of accidental injuries 26 April 1918. Aged 23. Baptised 3 March 1895 in Ayot St Peter, son of John (a Farmer) and Kate Welsh. Native of Roestock, Herts. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Welch, of Vixendell, Roestock, St. Albans. Joied the service 11 September 1914, promoted 12 November 1917. On 29 January 1909 shows he was of age and left Ayot St Peter National Mixed School. In the 1901 census he was aged 6, born Ayot St Peter, son of John and Kate Welsh, grandson of William and Amelia Welsh, resident Manor Farm, Ayot St Peter, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 16, born Ayot St Peters, Herts, an Engineer's Apprentice, boarding at 83 Hartley Road, Luton, Bedfordshire. Buried in BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France.
