The Lemsford Parish Memorial is to be found in the churchyard of St. John's Church, Brocket oad, Lemsford. It takes the form of a Celtic crossset on a three stepped plinth with the dedication and names facing out of the churchyard, railings in front. There are 14 names listed for those who fell in World War 1 and 5 names for World War 2. The memroial was originally unveiled by Lieut. General the Earl of Cavan on 20 July 1919. [Listed as BUNNAGE on memorial] Private PO/11207, H.M.S. "Puma," Portsmouth Division, Royal Marine Light Infantry - "Q" Ship. Killed in action 6 November 1917. Born 10 November 1883 in Lemsford, Hertfordshire. Brother of Mrs C. Goss, of 16, Council Cottages, Mays Lane, High Barnet, Herts. Prior to enlistment he was a farm labourer. Enlisted 1 January 1901 in London, re-engaged October 1913, religious denomination Church of England, height 5 feet 9¼ inches, fresh complexion, brown hair, blue eyes. In the 1911 census he was aged 28, a Private, R.M.L.I., born Lemsford, Herts., aboard H.M.S. "Roxburgh", berthed in Portsea and Landport, Portsmouth. No known grave. Commemorated at PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 27.

David

[Listed as COCKRANE on CWGC and SDGW and Census] Private G/23264, 1st Battalion, Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) formerly 11518, The Buffs (East kent Regiment). Killed in action 5 July 1917. Born Hand Side, Hertfordshire, resident Hallingbury, Hertfordshire, enlisted Epping. In the 1911 census he was aged 12, born Hatfield, hertfordshire, at school, son of John and Lucy Cockrane (sic), resident North Road, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

FREEMAN

Herbert Edward

Private 16466, 7th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916. Born Newton, Oxon, resident Stanborough, Hertfordshire, enlisted St. Albans, hertfordshire. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Cemetery/memorial reference: Pier and Face 2 C.

Gunner 82155, 50th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 23 April 1917. Aged 21. Born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, enlisted Nottigham. Son of Mary Ann Goodge, of "Riverside," Lemsford, Hatfield, Herts. In the 1901 census he was aged 6, born lensford, hertfordshire, son of Walter and Mary Ann Goodge, resident Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 censsu he was aged 16, born Lemsford, hertfordshire, a Railway Porter, resident with his widowed mother, Mary Goodge, in Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in AUBIGNY COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Pas de Calais, France. Plot II. Row B. Grave 56.

[Memorial states 40th Battalion], Lance Corporal 435211, 49th Battalion, Canadian Infantry. Killed in action between 2 and 5 June 1916 during the Attack at Sanctuary Wood. Born 11 February 1875. Brother of Mrs J Cochrane, of Church Hill, Lemsford, Hertfordshire and Thomas Halsey, of 37, Temperance Street, St. Albans. Attested 19 May 1915, aged 40, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, City (?) Foreman by trade, single, height 5 feet 5 inches, girth 35 inches, light complexion, blue eys, light hair, religious denomination Methodist. Sailed from Canada 27 October 1915, arrived France 22 December 1915. In the 1901 census he was aged 3, born Lensford, hertfordshire, son of William and gertrude Halsey, resident Handside, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in DIVISIONAL COLLECTING POST CEMETERY AND EXTENSION, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot II. Row F. Grave 7. Private 26303, 1st Battalion, East Surrey Regiment. Killed in action 6 Noevmber 1917. Born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, resident Buckhurst Hill, Essex, enlisted Mill Hill, Middlesex. In the 1901 census he was aged 19, known as George, born Hatfield, Hertfordshire, a General Labourer, a boarder, resident Lemsford Village, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 29, known as George, born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, a Waterman, a boarder, resident 109 Third Avenue, Manor Park East, East Ham, London & Essex. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 79 to 80 and 163A.

[Memorial states Hertfordshire Regiment] Private G/15596, 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. Killed in action 1 February 1918. Aged 29. Born Hatfield, Hertfordshire, enlisted Hertford. Son of George Henry and Elizabeth Mardle, of Cromer Hyde, Halfield, Herts; brother of Frank (below). In the 1901 census he was aged 13, born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, son of george and Elizabeth Mardle, resident Cromer Hyde, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in CROIX-DU-BAC BRITISH CEMETERY, STEENWERCK, Nord, France. Plot I. Row D. Grave 8.

Bombardier 17691, "D" Battery, 5th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 11 June 1916. Aged 25. Born Windsor, berkshire, enlisted London. Son of Mrs. E. Mardle, of Cromer Hyde, Hatfield, Herts; brother of Ernest (above). In the 1901 census he was aged 10, born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, son of george and Elizabeth Mardle, resident Cromer Hyde, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in RAILWAY DUGOUTS BURIAL GROUND (TRANSPORT FARM), West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot VI. Row E. Grave 10.

Private 14200, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 11 July 1916. Born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, resident Hatfield, Hertfordshire, enlisted Hertford. In the 1901 census he was aged 4, born Lensford, Hertfordshire, son of William and Elizabeth Spriggs, resident Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Lensford, Hertfordshire, at school, resident with his widowed mother, Elizabeth Spriggs, in Lemsford Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No.2, Somme, France. Plot XXIX. Row J. Grave 5.

[Listed as James William on CWGC] Lieutenant, 18th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. Died 11 June 1916. Aged 23. Son of William and Annie Strong, of "Moorhayes", London Rd., St. Albans. Buried in RUE-DES-BERCEAUX MILITARY CEMETERY, RICHEBOURG-L'AVOUE, Pas de Calais, France . Plot I. Row F. Grave 7.

Rifleman 591917, 2nd/18th Battalion (London Irish Rfiles), London Regiment. Killed in action in Egypt 23 December 1917. Aged 25. Born hertford, resident Kensington Palace Gardens, enlisted Chelsea. Son of Mrs. R. Tims, of Lemsford, Hatfield, Herts. In the 1901 censsu he was aged 8, born Lemsford, hertfordshire, son of Betsy Tims, a widow, resident Lemsford Village, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, a Servant Domestic Hall Boy, resident Little Barford, Bedfordshire. Buried in JERUSALEM WAR CEMETERY, Israel and Palestine (including Gaza). Section T. Grave 26.

Sergeant 15023, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 21 September 1918. Born and resident Lemsford, Hertfordshire, enlisted Hertford. Awarded the Military Medal (M.M.). In the 1901 census Sidney Thomas Walby was aged 4, born hertfordshire, son of George and Harriet Ann Walby, resident Cromer Hyde, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in UNICORN CEMETERY, VENDHUILE, Aisne, France. Plot III. Row A. Grave 6.

Private 45976, 2nd Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment formerly 27764, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 19 September 1918. Aged 37. Born Hatfield, Hertfordshire, enlisted Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire. Son of Alfred and Eliza Welch, late of Stanborough, Hatfield, Herts. No known grave. Private 23378, 2nd Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 3 July 1916. Aged 20. Born and resident Lemsford, hertforshire, enlisted St. Albans. Son of Mrs. E. Wren, of Lemsford, Hatfield, Herts. In the 1901 census he was age 4, born Lemsford, Hertfordshire, son of george and Lizzie Wren, resident Lemsford Village, Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 14, born Lensford, hertfordshire, son of George abd Mary Ann Lizzie Wren, resident Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. No known grave. Captain 99180, 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Killed in action 10 June 1944. Aged 38. Born Surrey, resident Suffolk. Birth registered in the April to June Quarter 1906 in the Epsom Registration District, Surrey. Son of Edward Hall Alderson and Mary Emily Alderson; husband of Gillian Mary Alderson, of Hollesley, Suffolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 5, born Kingswood, Surrey, son of Edward A and Mary Emily Alderson, resident Red Lodge Kingswood near Epsom, Kingswood, Surrey. In 1927 he was a pupil, aged 20, who sailed to Mombasa, Kenya abort the S.S. Mantola. In 1936, aged 30, he married Gillian Mary Barrington in St Martin-In-The-Fields, London. Buried at BOLSENA WAR CEMETERY, Italy. Plot IV. Row A. Grave 12.

Lance Bombardier 1774334, 250 Battery, 28 Light A.A. Regiment, Royal Artillery. Died on service from Jaundice Toxic Hepatitis 11 December 1942. Aged 38. Born Ayott Green Hertfordshire, and resident Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Son of Arthur James Eagles and Florence Maud Eagles; husband of Ivy May Eagles, of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 6, born Ayot St. Peters, Welwyn, hertfordshire, at school, son of Florence Alice and Arthur James Eagles, resident Lemsford, Hatfield, Hertfordshire. Buried in DELHI WAR CEMETERY, India. Plot 4. Row E. Grave 7.

Private 6025880, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment. Died 16 June 1944. Aged 33. Son of Ernest and Rose Flitney; husband of Doris Flitney, of Welwyn Garden City, Hertfordshire. Buried in TAUKKYAN WAR CEMETERY, Myanmar (Burma). Plot 7. Row E. Grave 2.

Women's Auxiliary Air Force (W.A.A.F.) Died October to November Quarter 1946 in the Hatfield Registration District. Aged 32. Born 21 October 1913. In the 1939 Register she was employed as a Cook to Robert W M and Mary Arberthurt, working at The Fixs, Bell Bar Woodside Lane, Hatfield R.D., Hertfordshire.

[Listed as Amos Alfred WILLIAMS on CWGC and Army Roll of Honour] Private 7521439, Royal Army Medical Corps. Died as a Japanese Prisoner of War 19 September 1943. Aged 28. Born and resident Hertfordshire. Son of Alfred Williams, and of Elizabeth Mary Williams, of Lemsford, Hertfordshire; husband of Emily Elizabeth Williams. Buried in KANCHANABURI WAR CEMETERY, THailand. Plot 2. Row D. Grave 71.
