Compiled and copyright © 2004 - Transcribed & researched
Rosalyn Knight & Martin Edwards
The
Letchworth War Memorials are to be found in Station Place, Letchworth
Garden City. The World War 1 memorial stands separately from the World
War 2 memorial which is set back. The World War 1 memorial has several
names without initials and has several names added out of order probably
at a later date. To aid research these names have now been sorted so
that the list is in alphabetical order.

Message from Michael Cross - 14th April 2002: "I was at this
man's grave recently (no personal connection; I visit Jolimetz
most years) and thought I would mention to you that his grave
receives a poppy each Remembrance Sunday from some locals who
were originally from England. His is a lonely grave, being the
only CWG in a French Communal Cemetery. I visit this place only
because my Granddad was there in 1918 - L/C Brown's grave is the
only obvious sign that the war passed this way. The adjoining
Forest of Mormal has rather more significance in relation to the
Great War."

MYNOTT |
Eli |
PPrivate
33126, 6th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action
27 May 1918. Born Horseheath, Cambridgeshire, enlisted Luton, Beds.
Son of George and Maria Mynott. Resident at 110 Ridge Road, Letchworth.
In the 1911 census he is listed as aged 14, a Core Maker, born 1897
Limbris, Cambs (sic). Formerly 6574, Bedfordshire Regiment. Buried
in TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, WIMILLE, Pas de Calais, France.
Plot XVI. Row A. Grave 16.
There
is a British Army WW1 Service Record for him although this gives
him as deceased in 1917 although later the date is given as missing
27 May 1918. This may account for his appearance in the Leicestershire
Regiment and he may have presumed missing in action at the time.
At the time of enlistment his address is given as 62 Park Road,
Luton, an iron Moulder, aged 19 years 6 months. He enlisted 23
February 1916 in the 5th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment, his
service number 6574. The papers have his father, George Mynott,
of 110 Ridge Road, Letchworth, crossed out as next of kin and
his Uncle Charles, of 62 Park Corner, Luton substituted. He was
5 feet 2½ inches, girth 35 inches. He was on home duty
until 29 November 1916 and joined the BEF 30 November 1916. His
mother was deceased at the time he enlisted. The next page of
documents give him as embarked at Folkestone with 3rd Battalion,
Leicestershire Regiment and joining the 8th battalion on 12 December
1916. he appears to have suffered gunshot wounds on several occasions
during 1917.The memorial scroll is acknowledged as being received
by his father, George Mynott, 26 June 1920. His place of birth
on his Medical History is given as Horseheath, Cambridgeshire.
Further statistics show him as 112lbs. The note for his belongings
then give him as belonging to the 6th Battalion, Leicestershire
Regiment. He has a black mark against his name when he was convicted
on 24 May 1916 at Luton with 21 days hard labour to Bedford Prison
for assaulting a Police Constable.
