NORTHCHURCH - WAR MEMORIALS

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2004 - Transcribed Carolynn Langley; researched Martin Edwards
additional information Clive Blofield - Chairman, The Northchurch Society.

There are two memorials in churchyard of St. Mary's Church which stands by the A41 in Northchurch, Herts. The World War 1 top of the World War I memorial is not missing. It became unsafe when a flaw developed in the base stone on which the names of the fallen are recorded. To avoid the possibility of an accident and to reduce the chances of further deterioration in the condition of the base and the consequent loss of the names, it was removed and mounted on a new base stone opposite. The absence from the memorial (and elsewhere) of the name of Fred Saunders Ruffhead came to light a few years ago. The poor condition of the original memorial base stone precluded his name being added to that, but it will shortly be added to another memorial to the fallen of World War I to be found at the west end of the north wall of the north aisle of St Mary's church.
