ST ALBANS, POST OFFICE WAR MEMORIAL

This memorial was originally, in the old Post Office building but was moved circa 18989/90 when the Post Office moved it headquarters to a larger building. It is to be found on the Brick Knoll industrial site Ashley Road, St Albans. The memorial itself takes the form of a wooden board with a rectangular pediment and the inscription in gold lettering, some in filled with either blue or red. The memorial lists sixty nine Post Office Employees from World War 1; eight men who died and sixty one who servered and returned, some of whom are listed as having being wounded.

EVEREST George Edward
Private 15110, "C" Company, 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 23rd January 1916. Born Woolwich, Kent, enlisted St. Albans, resident Coventry. IZZARD Ernest Walter
Corporal 268052, Hertfordshire Regiment. Killed in action 31st July 1917. Aged 31. Enlisted and resident St Albans. Son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Izzard, of 35, Upper Culver Rd., St. Albans; husband of Lily May Izzard, of 33 Kimberley Rd. North, St. Albans, Herts. Formerly 72761, Royal Army Medical Corps. MEAD Harry Edgar
Acting Corporal 265861, 1st/1st Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment. Died 16th November 1918. Aged 21. Enlisted Hertford, resident St Albans. Son of Ben and Annie Mead, of 27, Bernard St., St. Albans, Herts. Formerly Private 3152, Hertfordshire Regiment). Buried in ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot L. Row D. Grave 3. ROBERTS John Francis
Private 4243, 3rd Battalion, London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers). Enlisted at age 38 at Mile End in 1914 as a wartime volunteer. After training and service at home with a reserve battalion of this regiment, he and his regiment left England in June of 1915 and was posted to and served at Loos, France in early 1916, where he joined the 1/3rd Battalion London Regiment, part of the 56th (London) Division and then on to The Somme Front. Born in and life-long resident of St. Albans, John Francis Roberts was killed in action at age 40 on that fateful First Day of the Battle of the Somme, 1st July 1916, during the 1st Objective of the infamous Gommecourt Diversion. His remains lay to rest at Hebuterne Military Cemetery, Hebuterne, Pas-de-Calais, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France. Plot: IV. M. 36. The inscription on his grave marker reads:

“HE GAVE HIS LIFE THAT OTHERS MIGHT LIVE”.

John Francis Roberts served as postman for the St. Albans Post Office prior to his enlistment. After enlisting, he moved his family from St. Albans to Kilburn so they could be together while he served at home prior to his deployment. John was survived by his Mother, Fanny (Raven) Roberts; Wife, Annie (Voyce); and six children, Bill, Nelly, Dolly, Percy, Arthur and Lily. Photo was taken on the very day John and his regiment left London for France.
