WELWYN GARDEN CITY WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Transcribed and researched Martin Edwards
2023
Although
the town was not founded until 1920 there are names listed for World
War 1 which we think are taken from Hatfield Hyde, Bishops Hatfield
and Lemsford. It was the second garden city in England (founded 1920)
and one of the first new towns (designated 1948). The memorial is located
in the gardens found in the town centre, Howardsgate, Welwyn Garden
City. It takes the form of a rectangular stone with a shaped top and
a shaped base standing on a paved pathway which has a grass cross inset
into the middle. There are 22 names for World War 1 and 107 names for
World War 2 and one for Northern Ireland. The names have been sorted
here into alphabetical order within conflict for ease of reading and
research.

We
regret to hear that Corporal H. W. Bray, 1,793, 'A' Company, a
son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Bray, of Hatfield Hyde, died of wounds
on Sunday, June 25, at La Bassée. Prior to enlisting in
the Territorials four years ago, he was assistant electrical engine
driver with his father, and in the employ of Lord Salisburv, at
Hatfield House. His mother was informed of the sad event by telegram
on June 26. Much sympathy is felt for the family, who are well
known and highly respected. Early in the present year Corporal
Bray was at home on leave and. when he returned to the Front his
mother had a presentiment that she should never see him again,
which most unfortunately has proved only too true. Deceased had
been wounded in the earlier stages of the war, when a private,
but recovered and returned to duty and was promoted corporal.
