
WHEATHAMPSTEAD WAR MEMORIAL

The
Wheathampstead War Memorial is to be found in the High Street, on the
edge of St Helen's Church graveyard. The memorial takes the form of
a stone base surmounted by plinth, shaft and cross of sacrifice and
is sited within a walled area set back from the road with iron gates
at the front; there are Panels in relief on the sides of the plinth
with the inscription in black lettering; a bronze sword is mounted on
the cross with a bronze wreath at the base of the shaft. The memorial
was unveiled 6 April 1920 by Field-Marshall The Earl of Kavan, K.P.,
G.C.B., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., G.B.E. The memorial was built by J P White
& Sons and Westwood Brothers. There are 63 names for World War 1
and 32 for World War 2.
