Volume 2, Part 4, Page 22 - BURGESS, John (M.M), Private, No 60026, 26th (Service) Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)

Youngest son of Thomas Burgess, of Forty Foot Bridge, Ramsay, co.Hunts, Farm Labourer, by his wife, Sarah Hannah, dau. of Samuel Leach; Born Ellington, co. Huntingdon, 19th Nov, 1889; educated National School there; was a Herdsman; enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment 12th Feb, 1916; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 29th Sept following, being transferred to the Royal Fusiliers; proceeded to Italy 10th Nov, 1917, returned to France in Feb and died at No 2 Canadian Stationery Hospital, Doullens, 1st April, 1918 from wounds received at Cambrai the previous day. Buried in Doullens Cemetery. He was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 17th June, 1917) for carrying messages under heavy shell fire. Unm.

Volume 1, part 1, page 145, FULLER, Leonard, Private, number 1170, Princess Patricias Canadian Light Infantry. 5th son of the late Alfred Fuller, of Ramsey cou. Hunts, J.P. and Alderman of Hunts County Council, by his wife Augusta Elizabeth dau of Charles Pope Bates of Ramsey, M.R.C.S. Born Ramsey , co Hunts 2 September 191881 , educated Aldenham school ,Herts. Went to Canada in 1912, and settled at Montreal as a real estate merchant, volunteered at the outbreak of war and joined PPCLI in aug 1914, came over with the first Canadian contingent in Oct .

Trained on Salisbury plain during the winter, went to France in dec 1914 and died at Dickebusch, Belgium 8 March 1915, from wounds received in action at St Eloi.

He was buried at the Regimental cemetery at Dickebusch. Unmarried.

51244 Private, 1st The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 7 June 1915. Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Zillebeke, Ieper, Belgium.

21st Sept. 1915.

Dear Mr. Negus,

I am very sorry to tell you that your son was killed in action this afternoon. A shell burst quite near him and killed him instantaneously.

He could not have known anything about it, and of that I am glad.

Your son is a great loss to his friends and myself.

I could not wish for a more cheery lad or a more willing worker.

His place in his gun team will be hard to fill. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your sorrow.

He will be buried tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. quite near the firing line.

To Mr. J.T. Negus

Dear Mr. Negus,

It is with great sorrow that we have to inform you of the death of your son Rifleman E. Negus on September 21st.

It is very difficult to know how to comfort you in this sad loss, but it is surely some consolation to know that your son died doing his duty.

Your son's body was buried in a little cemetery behind the trenches and is marked by a wooden cross.

Volume 2, Part 5, Page 131 - NEWTON, Arthur Leslie Garman - Gunner, No 266595, E Battery, Royal Horse Artillery

Eldest son of Athur Newton, of Four Hundred Farm, Ramsay, Farmer, by his wife, Mary, dau. of the late James Green, of Lakesend, Wisbech; born Ramsay, co.Huntingdon, 14th Oct.1895; educated St.Ives Grammar School; was a farmer in Ramsay; enlisted in the R.H.A., 10th Oct.1917; served with The Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from16th April.1918; was invalided home in the following Oct. suffering from Heart trouble; returned to France after The Armistice to serve with th Army of Occupation, and died at No 50 Casualty Clearing Station, Huy, 2nd Feb.1919, of Typhoid, contracted while on active service. Buried at La Sarte Cemetery. His Commanding Officer wrote stating that he was always very attentive and thorough, and an efficient gunner. Unm.

Volume 2 , Part 3, Page 264 - TAYLOR, Sidney - Private, No 23638, 1st Battalion, (16th Foot), The Bedfordshire Regiment

Son of John Taylor, of Blue Bell, Forty-Foot Bridge, Ramsay, co.Huntingdon, by his wife Sarah, dau. of George Spencer, Farmer. Born St Marys, Ramsay aforesaid 15th Aug, 1897; educated Stonea, Wimblington, co. Cambridge; enlisted 22nd Nov, 1915; served with The Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 24th July, 1916 , and was killed in action at Gheluvelt, near Ypres, 7th Oct, 1917. Unm.

5885217 Private, 2nd Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 7 August 1944, age 24. Son of Walter & Louisa Papworth, of Ramsey Mereside; husband of Joyce Papworth. Vaudry Churchyard, Calvados, France. He has been honoured by the French who named a school after him in Vaudry, the village he died defending. Curiously he is buried in the local cemetery rather than with his 51 comrades at the war graves cemetery at St Charles De Percy.
