Huntingdon, 19th Nov, 1889; educated National School there; was a Herdsman; enlisted in the 2nd Battalion, The Bedfordshire Regiment 12th Feb, 1916; served with the Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from 29th Sept following, being transferred to the Royal Fusiliers; proceeded to Italy 10th Nov, 1917, returned to France in Feb and died at No 2 Canadian Stationery Hospital, Doullens, 1st April, 1918 from wounds received at Cambrai the previous day. Buried in Doullens Cemetery. He was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 17th June, 1917) for carrying messages under heavy shell fire. Unm.

Trained on Salisbury plain during the winter, went to France in dec 1914 and died at Dickebusch, Belgium 8-3-15, from wounds received in action at St Eloi.

He was buried at the regimental cemetery at Dickebusch. Unmarried.

Dear Mr. Negus,

I am very sorry to tell you that your son was killed in action this afternoon. A shell burst quite near him and killed him instantaneously.

He could not have known anything about it, and of that I am glad.

Your son is a great loss to his friends and myself.

I could not wish for a more cheery lad or a more willing worker.

His place in his gun team will be hard to fill. Please accept my deepest sympathy in your sorrow.

He will be buried tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. quite near the firing line.

It is with great sorrow that we have to inform you of the death of your son Rifleman E. Negus on September 21st.

It is very difficult to know how to comfort you in this sad loss, but it is surely some consolation to know that your son died doing his duty.

Your son's body was buried in a little cemetery behind the trenches and is marked by a wooden cross.

Eldest son of Athur Newton, of Four Hundred Farm, Ramsay, Farmer, by his wife, Mary, dau. of the late James Green, of Lakesend, Wisbech; born Ramsay, co.Huntingdon, 14th Oct.1895; educated St.Ives Grammar School; was a farmer in Ramsay; enlisted in the R.H.A., 10th Oct.1917; served with The Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders from16th April.1918; was invalided home in the following Oct. suffering from Heart trouble; returned to France after The Armistice to serve with th Army of Occupation, and died at No 50 Casualty Clearing Station, Huy, 2nd Feb.1919, of Typhoid, contracted while on active service. Buried at La Sarte Cemetery. His Commanding Officer wrote stating that he was always very attentive and thorough, and an efficient gunner. Unm.
