CANTERBURY BOER WAR (SOUTH AFRICA) MEMORIAL

Boer War - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Transcribed David Hughes and Neil Clark 2006

This memorial is to be found in the Dane John Gardens. The memorial lists those men who died serving with the Buffs, the Yeomanry and the Volunteer Battalions of the Buffs. Within each section the details of the men are listed by how they died, killed in action/died of wounds or died of disease. For purposes of this page the names have been sorted into alphabetical order. The memorial itself takes the form of an obelisk rising from a panelled base with names on three sides. The front of emorial supports a pedestal with a figure of a soldier in Boer War Campaign dress, standing at ease with a slouched hat and bandolier supposedly looking towards South Africa. Regimental badges as apprpriate can be found on each face and behind the head of the soldier on the front face is a wreath. The memorial lists 300 names by Regiment, battalion and then rank and name. THe battalions covered are the 2nd, 3rd, 1st and 2nd Volunteer Battalions plus the Yeomanry. The memorial was restored in 1999 at a cost of £80,000. The bayonet on the soldiers rifle was stolen but was readded later, the culprit owned up to the theft in the local paper. The memorial was unveiled on 24th May 1904 by Field Marshal The Right Honourable Earl Roberts.
