- 2nd Lieut. Archibald John Corlett. 2nd Batt. East Kent Regt. (The
Buffs), was killed in action near Brakenlaagte, 20 miles north-west
of Bethel, Oct. 31st, 1901. He was the son of John Corlett, Esq.,
of Chariton Court, East Sutton, Maidstone, Kent, proprietor of the
Sporting Times. 2nd Lieut. Corlett was born in Nov., 1875, and educated
at Sutton Valence School. He went out to South Africa before the
war, joined the Natal Mounted Police, and served throughout the
campaign, being promoted from the ranks of the Natal Police to a
commission in the Buffs in May, 1900. |

- Major Lionel George Nutall Eales, 2nd Batt. East Kent Regt. (The
Buffs), died May 2nd, 1902, at Lorenço Marques, on board
the transport Avoca, from acute inflammation. Born in July, 1864,
he entered the East Kent Regt. Aug., 1884, being promoted Capt April,
1893, and major May, 1901. He served with the Manipur Expedition,
1891, as Signalling Officer, being mentioned in despatches, and
receiving the medal with clasp. From Nov., 1897, to July, 1901,
Major Eales held the appointment of adjutant of the 1st V.B. of
his Regiment at Dover. He then proceeded to South Africa and was
appointed commandant at Eerste Fabreiken and afterwards at Alkmaar. |

- Capt. Francis Joyce Englebach, 1st Batt. East Kent Regt. (The
Buffs), was killed in action near Bothaville, Nov. 6th, 1900. He
was born Oct., 1867, and served in the ranks for nearly eight years,
gaining his commission in The Buffs June, 1894, being promoted lieut.
May, 1897, and capt. April, 1900. He served throughout the operations
of the Chitral Relief Force, under Sir Robert Low, 1895, with the
1st Batt. The Buffs, receiving the medal with clasp. He also saw
service in the operations on the Niger in 1897-98, including the
expedition to Siam, and received the medal with clasp. He was mentioned
in despatches, L.G., Sept. 10th, 1901, for his services in South
Africa. |

Buffs), was killed in action at Driefontein, March 16th, 1900. He
was born Aug., 1859, educated at Brighton College and Eton (Mr.
Vidal's), and joined the Buffs from the 2nd Brigade Scottish Division
Royal Artillery July, 1882, being promoted capt. March, 1893. Capt.
Eustace embarked with his battalion (which formed part of the 6th
Division) for South Africa in Dec., 1899, and was present at the
Battle of Paardeberg. His death is mentioned in the despatch of
F.-.M. Earl Roberts, from Bloemfontein, March 15th, 1900. |

- Capt. Fermor Godfrey-Faussett, 2nd Batt. East Kent Regt. (The
Buffs), died at Paardeberg Feb. 20th, 1900, from the effects of
an accidental gunshot wound. He was born Sept., 1870, was educated
at Marlborough, and entered the Buffs from the 4th Batt. Leinster
Regt. Sept., 1892, being promoted lient. July, 1895, and Capt. Nov.,
1899. Capt. Godfrey-Faussett embarked for South Africa with his
battalion in Dec., 1899, and served with the 6th Division in the
advance to Klip Drift and Paardeberg. His name is inscribed on a
tablet placed in Marlborough College Chapel in memory of all Mariburians
who fell in the war. |

- 2nd Lieut. L. M. Oliver, 6th Dragoons, was killed in action near
Heilbron, Nov. 30th, 1901. He was the only son of Mrs. Oliver, of
Castle Hill Avenue, Folkestone, was born in 1881, and educated privately.
He first entered the 3rd Batt. of the Buffs (East Kent Regiment),
Feb., 1900, in which he served in South Africa till Oct., 1901,
when he was granted a commission in the 6th Inniskilling Dragoons,
a few weeks before he was killed. |

- Capt. Naunton Henry Vertue, p.s.c., East Kent Regt., was killed
in action at Spion Kop, in the operations on the Upper Tugela, on
Jan. 24th, 1900. He was born in Jan., 1863, educated at Clifton
and entered the East Kent Regt. Feb., 1884, being promoted lieut.
May, 1890, and capt. March, 1893. He was adjutant of his battalion
from May, 1890, to May, 1894, and served as A.D.C. to the Brigadier-Gen.
commanding in Ceylon from March, 1897, to Jan., 1899. At the time
of his death, Capt. Vertue held the appointment of Brigade-Major
to the 11th Infantry Brigade in South Africa, commanded by Major-Gen.
Woodgate. Capt. Vertue was mentioned in despatches, L.G., Feb. 8th,
1901. |
