Corporal S/31185, Supply Company (Hong Kong), Royal Army Service Corps. Died 23rd November 1917 age 21. Born Holborn, London. Enlisted Shorncliffe. Resided Folkestone.

ENGLISH

Nathaniel Joseph

Master, SS “Fenay Lodge” (London), Mercantile Marine. Died 7th March 1917 aged 41 years. Nathaniel’s parents were residents of Folkestone. Four of Captain English’s crew perished with him after their 3,223 ton vessel belonging to the Fenay Steamship Company was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine approximately 250 miles North West of Fastnet.

Private 3290, 1st County of London Yeomanry, (Middlesex Duke of Cambridgeshire’s Hussars. Died 26th October 1916. Born Folkestone. Enlisted Chelsea, London. Resided Folkestone.

Archibald Spencer

Captain, 5TH Battalion, (Saskatchewan Regiment) Canadian Infantry. Died 26th September 1916. Born 14th October 1886 in Folkestone. Enlisted Calgary (Canada). Resided Edmonton, Alberta, (Canada). Graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge, and was a school teacher at King Edward School, Edmonton, Alberta prior to enlistment.

Second Lieutenant, 1ST Battalion, Queens Own Royal West Kent Regiment. Died 28th October 1914 aged 24 years.

Rifleman 553159, 1/6th Battalion, London Regiment (Queens Westminster Rifles. Died 8th April 1917 aged 19 years. Born Folkestone. Resided Folkestone.

Sergeant 117406, 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles (British Columbia Regiment). Died 25th August 1917. Born Folkestone. Enlisted Red Deer (Canada). Brother of Roland Major. Both are commemorated on the village war memorial at Stanford near Folkestone, their father lived at “Connaught Lodge,” Westernhanger, Stanford.

Private G/22265, 6TH Battalion, The Queen’s (Royal West Surrey Regiment). Died 12 April 1917. Born Folkestone 29th July 1878. Enlisted Dover. Resided Dover. Henry is also commemorated on the memorial plaque in the Bonnington (St Rumwold’s) Church near Ashford.
