WEST James William
Private – James William West was born in Margate in 1886. He married Edith Adelaide Clayson in Margate in 1911 and a daughter was born the following year. Edith’s family were from the Elham area and it appears they moved back there as the family were living at Mill Cottage, Lyminge when James West joined up on 7th September 1914. James West joined The Buffs (East Kent Regiment) as Private G/1431. He was posted to France with the 8th Battalion and took part in the Battle of Loos. He was listed as missing on 26th September 1915 although it was later reported that he was a prisoner of war. He was repatriated on 25th May 1916 and discharge on 23rd June 1916 on the ground of being medically unfit for duty. His records state that "in action at Hulloch Operation he received a gun shot wound to the abdomen, which has healed with some tendancy to hernia". He had also fractured his left femur, which, although the fractured, had healed; the missile was "still in situ" and as a result his left leg was 2 inches shorter. By the time James West returned home the family were living at Ivydene, Station Road, Lyminge. His death is recorded in the March quarter of 1919. His last medical examination was on 23rd May 1918 therefore it is likely that his injuries contributed to his death.
