UPFOLD Frederick Hedley Lawrence
Frederick was born in Tunbridge Wells and was a resident of the town but enlisted at Oxford. He was a Corporal (#1973) with the Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry, 2nd/4th Battalion, who died of wounds in France July 14, 1916. He is recorded at the Merville Communal Cemetery (V. B. 15). He was the son of Mr J. W. Upfold of 20 Grove Hill Rd., Tunbridge Wells. He is also sometimes given as Frank Hedley Lawrence Upfold. (679)
URBAN Oscar Arthur
His name is given variously in military, birth, census records etc as Oscar Arthur or just Arthur Urban. He was a 2nd Lieut. with the 11th Battalion, attached to the 9th Battalion, East Surrey Regiment who according to military records died in France September 3, 1916 and is recorded at the Thiepval Memorial (pier and face 6B and 6C). He is recorded in memorial records as dying age 31 and the son of Mrs Anna Urban of "sunnybank" Farncombe, Surrey. Probate records for him confirm his place and date of death and his military unit and give his former address as 2 Calverley Mount, Tunbridge Wells. The executor of his will was his spinster sister Rosa Martha Urban. Oscar was born in the 1st quarter of 1885 at Godalming, Surrey. In 1891 he was living with his parents Rudolf and Annis Urban at Godalming, Surrey. In 1901 he was living in Fulham. London with his brother Richard (engineer’s clerk) and Oscar was working as a solicitor’s clerk. In 1911 Oscar was living on his own in Dorchester, Dorset and working as a solicitor’s articled clerk. Since Oscar never married his connection to Tunbridge Wells seems to be his sister who was likely a resident there at the time of his death and his residency in the town before the war
