The Cenotaph in Adlington is situated on Railway Road, Adlington, between Chorley Road (A673) and Church Street (A6). It sits in an enclosed ‘Garden of Remembrance’ and was built from monies raised by the local community and takes the form of a stone structure with two pillars and a plaque in a walled surround encompassed by paving stones the garden area.

Gunner 137243, 39th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died of influenza due to field operations 21st November 1918. Aged 34. Son of Luke & Ann Gent who had a store on Railway Road in Adlington for many years. He attended the Reformed Church on Railway Road. Thomas' brothers and sisters later had a bakery, both post offices, and general store on Railway Road. Though he grew up in Adlington, Tom had moved to Port Sunlight after his marriage when he was working for Bill Lever, and is, therefore, listed as a resident of Port Sunlight. Tom was born Jan 22, 1884. He had one daughter. Husband of Letitia H. Gent of 34, Central Road, Port Sunlight, Cheshire. He received the Victory, British War Medal, and the 1915 Star. H is mentioned also as "Tom Gent, Post Office, Lower Adlington". Buried in Douai British Cemetery, Cuincy, Nord, France. Plot/Row/Section C. Grave 14.

Soldiers named on a plaque at Chorley’s Anderton CP School include Thomas Gent.

This memorial was erected in memory of the “Old Boys” who both gave their lives and won distinction in the Great War. It is a 4-sided tribute featuring the names of 38 ex-pupils of the Adlington District Council School, as it used to be called, who fought in the bloody conflict.

An article on Thomas W. Gent was found in the library at Bebbington on the Wirrel near Port Sunlight. It was in “the Progress”, a magazine associated with Lever Brothers. It appeared in January 1919. It says, "Gunner Thomas Whitfield Gent, 34, Royal Garrison Artillery, of our Rail & Water Dept, recently died of pneumonia. He resided in Central Road."
