BAIRSTOW

James William

Gunner 161188, 12th Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery. Died in Amritsar, India 14th July 1918. Aged 32. Son of Robert and Jane Bairstow; husband of Leah Bairstow, of 3 5, Glen Grove, Royton, Gtr. Manchester. Commemorated on KIRKEE 1914-1918 MEMORIAL, India. Face 1.

Note: He is buried in Amritsar Cantonment Cemetery. The KIRKEE MEMORIAL commemorates more than 1,800 servicemen who died in India during the First World War, who are buried in civil and cantonment cemeteries in India and Pakistan where their graves can no longer be properly maintained.

[Spelt Allen not Allan on SDGW and CWGC] Private 16884, 1st Battalion, King's Own (Royal Lancaster Regiment). Killed in action in France 16th October 1916. Aged 27. Enlisted Shaw, Lancshire. Son of Alfred and Mary Jane Cocker, of 6 Duckworth St., Shaw, Oldham; husband of Sarah Ann Cocker, of 4, Crompton St., Royton, Oldham. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 5 D and 12 B.

[Listed as Private on memorial] Driver T4/160969, Horse Transport, Royal Army Service Corps attached to 95th Labour Company. Died 25 December 1918 in Salonica, Greece. Aged 29. Son of Henry and Phoebe Lane, of 39, Park St., Royton, Oldham. In the 1911 census he was aged 21, son of Henry and Phoebe Lane, Cotton Operative Piercer, born Royton, resident 37 Middleton Road, Royton. Buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. Grave 1141.

Rifleman S/10340, 9th Battalion, Rifle Briagde (The Prince Consort's Own). Killed in action in France 5th January 1916. Aged 17. Born Lees, lancashire, enlisted Ashton-Under-Lyne, resident Royton. Son of Thomas and Jane Alice Sampson, of Irk Bank, Luzley Brook, Royton, Oldham. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 46 - 48 and 50.

Son of Mrs. Elizabeth Conner, of 177, Garforth St., Chadderton, Oldham. Attended Royton Primitice Methodist School. He was baptised 13 July 1892 in Oldham, Lancashire, son of Elizabeth Watson. In the 1911 census he was aged 18, stepson of Theophilus Connor and son of Elizabeth Connor, a Roler Coppler, born Oldham, Lancashire, resident 61 West End Street, Oldham, Lancashire. No known grave. Commemorated on HELLES MEMORIAl, Turkey. Panel 158 to 170.
