BILLINGBOROUGH WAR MEMORIAL

The Billingborough memorials can be found in the parish church of St Andrew. There are two tablets, one for World War 1 and one for World War 2, one above the other. The World War 1 memorial takes the form of a slate tablet set within a white granite frame, on either side of the frame is a sword in relief protruding above the top with an engraved crown with cross above at the top, centre. There are 18 names listed. The World War 2 memorial takes the form of a Grey, Hopton wood, stone tablet with raised border with an inscription in black lettering. There are 7 names listed. There are memorials within the church in various forms to three individuals.

Resident in Billingborough in 1901. Nephew of George Leeson, born c 1891 at Aldershot, Hampshire. Unable to identify CWGC/SDGW and no further information currently.

Private 53408. 10th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Died of wounds 17th August 1918, aged 30 years. Husband of H Durham. Born Billingborough, enlisted Bourne and resident Billingborough, Lincs. Commemorated MONT HUON MILITARY CEMETERY, Le Treport. VII.B.11B.

Leslie Grosvenor

Gunner 20981. B Bty, 58th Bde, Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action 28th July 1917, aged 23 years. Son of Charles Grosvenor and Mary A Hodgkinson of Billingborough, Lincs. Born Billingborough, Lincs and enlisted Nottingham, Notts. Commemorated YPRES (Menin Gate) MEMORIAL. Panel 5 and 9.

To the glory of God and in memory of Leslie Grosvenor Hodgkinson, Royal Field Artillery. Eldest son of Charles Grosvenor Hodgkinson and Mary his wife. Born on St Andrews Day 1893, killed in action near Ypres during the Great War 1917, aged 23 years. This light was given by his parents.

2nd Lieutenant. 15th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 20th July 1916, aged 22 years. Son of Charles Richard Thorold and Amy Winckley of Lillington, Leamington, Warwicks. Commemorated THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Pier and Face 10C, 10D, 11A.

This window is in loving memory of Charles Reginald Winckley 2nd Lieutenant, Sherwood Foresters. Killed in France leading an attack on 20th July 1916, aged 22 years. He was the second son of the Rev C.R Thorold Winckley, Vicar of this parish. Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori.
