BRACEBRIDGE HEATH WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located at the junction of Grantham and Sleaford roads, standing on Grantham Road, Bracebridge Heath, NorthKevesten, Lincolnshire. It takes the form of a two stepped square base surmounted by two stepped plinth, a tapered shaft and a stone cross witht he incised inscription on first face f the plinth. It was unveiled and dedicated March 1921. There 15 names listed for World War 1 and nine for World War 2.

Probably BAYES, George Albert Lance Corporal 241494 5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26/9/1917, age 23, Belgium. Born Willingham-by-Stow, Lincs, son of George and Sarah Jane (née Williams) Bayes, of Potter Hill Farm, North Collingham, Newark, Notts. Pre-war occupation farm servant. Commemorated on Panel 35 to 37 and 162 to 162A. Tyne Cot Memorial, and in St Peter's, Doddington.
BRACKENBURY John
Private 203113, 4th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 5/1/1918 Edinburgh, age 27. Awarded M M. Born 1890 Cherry Willingham, Lincs (CWGC has Broxholme, Lincs, birth register has surname Brackenbrow), son of Charles and Maria (née Wright) Brackenbury. Pre-war occupation farm waggoner. Buried in Grave M. 151, Lincoln (Canwick Road) Cemetery.
BROWN Sidney Frederick
Captain, 21st Sqdn. Royal Flying Corps. Died 21/7/1917, age 21. Born 1896 bpt 31/8/1896 Bracebridge, son of Frederick and Florence (née Jenkinson) Brown, of Sandfield House, Cross Cliff Hill, Lincoln. Buried in Grave XLV. B. 4, Tyne Cot Cemetery.
CLARRICOATES John Thomas
[CWGC has mis-spelling Clarricoats] Private 21514, 3rd Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 18/5/1916 Grimsby. Buried in Bracebridge (All Saints) Churchyard. Born 1896 Scopwick Heath, Lincs, son of George & Hannah (née Thorpe) Clarricoates. Enlisted 1915, prior occupation farm labourer.
COMRIE James
Private 4064, 1st/7th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers. Died of wounds 9/8/1916. Born 31/3/1881 Denny, Scotland, pre-war occupation professional footballer for Third Lanark, Reading, Glossop, Bradford City and Lincoln. Had worked part-time at Bracebridge Asylum. Commemorated on Panel 8 and 12, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
CREASEY Charles
Private 19378, 1st Bn. Coldstream Guards. Died of wounds 6/11/1918, age 32. Born 30/6/1886 Walcot, Lincs. Son of Cartwright and the late Betsy Creasey, of Bracebridge Heath; husband of Mary Ann (née Franklin) Creasey, of 3 Cliff Cottages, Bracebridge Heath, father of Dora, Edith, Betty. Enlisted 1915, previous occupation stoker at Bracebridge Asylum. Previously wounded at Cambrai in Nov. 1917. Buried in Grave III. C. 8, Awoingt British Cemetery. Also commemorated in Walcot Church.
DALTON Fred(erick)
Lance Corporal 21279, 1st Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 11/4/1917 Born Welton le Wold, Lincs, 1890, son of Edward & Susannah (née Hudson) Dalton of Louth. Enlisted Lincoln. Buried in Special Memorial 65, Wancourt British Cemetery. Also commemorated on Louth WM.
GIBBONS Arthur
Private 25669, 1st Bn. Grenadier Guards. Died 2/8/1917, age 27. Born 20/11/1890, bpt 6/3/1892 Bracebridge Heath, son of Benjamin and Annie (née Mitchell) Gibbons of Bracebridge Heath. Pre-war occupation horse driver for building contractor. Buried in Grave III. E. 21, Mendinghem Military Cemetery.
GRANTHAM William Percy
Lieutenant, 5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Date of Death: 26/9/1916. Born 1893, son of Samuel and the late Bessie Kezia Grantham of St. Winifred's, Cross O'Cliffe Hill, Bracebridge. Enlisted June 1915. Pre-war occupation insurance clerk. Buried in Grave XXXVI. B. 1, Tyne Cot Cemetery. Note: Initials reversed on memorial compared to CWGC and birth register. Also commemorated on main Lincoln WM and at Lincoln St Catherine.
GREENSMITH Herbert Butler
Corporal 201227, B Coy. 1st/4th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 2/8/1917, age 23. Born 17/10/1894 bpt 18/11/1894 Ladybridge, Babworth, Notts,. Son of Clara Greensmith, late of Brant Broughton, Newark; husband of Dora (née Massey) Greensmith, of 14 Waddington Rd., Bracebridge Heath. Pre-war occupation baker's assistant. Buried in Grave I. V. 6, Philosophe British Cemetery, Mazingarbe.
McLAVERTY Kenneth
Sergeant 6047, 6th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 9/8/1915 , Gallipoli. Born c1884 (?Barnet, Herts but not in Birth Register), husband of Olive Mary (née Whatmough) McLaverty. Enlisted Stamford, pre-war occupation soldier. Commemorated on Panel 44 to 46, Helles Memorial.

Born 29/10/1917 Lincoln, son of Hastewell Foster Bean and Laura (née Chambers) Bean; husband of Margaret Kathleen (née Fletcher) Bean, of Chaldon, Surrey. Pre-war occupation bus driver. Flight Lieutenant (W.Op./Air Gnr.) 138801, 161 Sqdn. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Killed 27/11/1944, age 23 . Wireless operator of Lockheed Hudson shot down over Luxembourg while on SOE mission from RAF Tempsford. Born 26/8/1921 Greenwich, son of Charles Frederick and Edith L Champion of Greenwich; husband of Freda (née Webber) Champion, of Bracebridge Heath. Pre-war occupation printer's compositor. Buried in Grave X. 26. 49, Brussels Town Cemetery.
