BROUGHTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located at the junction of High street and Scawby Road, Broughton, Humberside. It takes the form of a circular base surmounted by an octagonal step, a large octagonal plinth and a figure of a seated serviceman bheind whom is a rough stone wall. The inscriptions are on the sides of the plinth and an additional stone placed in front of the dedicatory inscription. The serviceman depicted is sitting in deep thought, his chin resting on one hand and a alurel branch in the other hand with his rifle resting between his legs. There are 34 names for World War 1 and 13 for World War 2. The memorial was dedicated by local clergymen and unveiled by the Earl of Yarborough 22nd October 1923 (details in the Scunthorpe Star 28th October 1923); the sculptor was Mr Gilbert Bayes, the architect Mr Dosser, builder Mr Harrison and the mason Messrs Bryan Bros. The memorial was given a clean up in 2009.
