COVENHAM ST BATHOLOMEW WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands in St Batholomew's Churchyard, Chapel Close, Covenham St Bartholomew, Lincolnshire and takes the form of a wheel cross set on a shaft on a tapering plinth and base. This surmounts a concrete base which has kerbstones and railings surorunding it. There are 23 names in total, 18 who served (not listed here) and 5 who gave their lives.

Private 41672, 10th Battalion, King's Own (Yorkshire Light Infantry). Killed in action 25 March 1918. Aged 34. Born Covenham, enlisted Louth. Son of George Bray; husband of Martha E. Bray, of Tetney, Thoresby, Lincs. No known grave. Commemorated on ARRAS MEMORIAL, Pas de Calais, France. Bay 7.

Private 242138, 'B' Company, 2/5th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1917. Aged 24. Born Covenham, enlisted Louth, resident Cleethorpes. Son of George and Sarah Bray, of Covenham, Louth; husband of Edith Alice Payne (formerly Bray), of 49, Oxford St., Cleethorpes, Lancs. No known grave. Commemorated on TYNE COT MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 35 to 37 and 162 to 162A.

Private 40637, 8th Battalion, Prince of Wales's (North Staffordshire Regiment). Killed in action 17 January 1917. Born Covenham, enlisted Louth. Formerly 50587, The Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL. Somme, France. Pier and Face 14 B and 14 C.

Private 6297, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 November 1914. Aged 30. Born Covenham, enlisted Louth. Brother of Mr. W. B. Spendlow, of Covenham St. Bart, Louth, Lincs. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 21.

JOHNSON

Sydney

Private MC/10679, 50th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died 9 June 1917. Born and resident Covenham, enlisted Louth. Formerly 13872, Lincolnshire Regiment. Buried in MONT HUON MILITARY CEMETERY, LE TREPORT, Seine-Maritime, France. Plot III. Row G. Grave 3B.
