The Grantham St Wulfram memorials can be found inside the church. The main World War memorial is in the form of a cross with dedicatory tablets and a crocketed spire. The highest stage has four richly canopied niches facing the four cardinal points and they form the shrine for the sculture. They are surmounted by pinnacles. The tablets inside the church consist of nine stone tablets separated by carved and moulded strips with carved pilasters at either end. The whole is finished below with a moulded base and, along the top, is the inscription in gilded lettering on a blue background and the names of the fallen are in red lettering. The figures depicted on the cross are the Blessed Virgin Mary and St John on the west side, St Wulfram on the north side, St Michael on the east side and St George on the south. The Cross shaft has 16 panelled faces. There are 313 names listed for World War 1. The memorial was built using public monies amounting to £1,517, the builders were Messrs Bowman & Son, the architect was Sir Charles A Nicholson and the architect Mr Phillips. PALS MISSING

Four Grantham soldiers, all members of the Lincolnshire Regt., are reported missing in the war in Norway.

Two them have been close friends since their schooldays. They are Pte. Frederick William Golden, 19, only son of Mr. A. C. Golden, 48, The Drive. Dysart-road, and Pte. George Alfred Perry, 20, third son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Perry, Front Villas, Dysart-road.

Pte Golden, before the outbreak of hostilities, was a baker in the employ of the Co-operative Society, Grantham, and during the Recruiting Week last year he joined the Territorials. He was a keen angler.

A butcher's assistant, employed Messrs. Dewhurst. Ltd., Pte. Perry also joined during the recruiting drive.

The lads were always together, even in the Army. and that seems to account for them being missing at the same time.

A third Pte. Dennis Dinsdale, 20, eldest son Mr. and Mi's. G. Dinsdale, 23, Agnes-terrace. Grantham, was a fitter in the employ of Messrs. Ruston and Hornsbv. Ltd.. before the war began He had been in the local Territorials for just over two years.

It is a coincidence that Pte. Ronald Stanley Ballaam, the other reported missing, had resided with his father, Mr. Frank Ballaam, next door to the home of Pte. Dinsdale at 22, Agnes-terrace.

Pte. Ballaam loined the local Territorials during the recruiting campaign at Grantham, and was a fireman with the L.N.E. Railwav Company. Although the fact that he is reported missing has been a shock to his father, it is somewhat comforting to know that one of Pte. Ballaam's officers, who has seen Mr. Ballaam sen., feels sure the lad has been taken prisoner.

CUST

William

To the memory of William Cust, Esq, a brave and judicious sea officer who after having signalised himself in a series of dangerous and successful enterprises was unfortunately killed by a cannon ball 8th March 1747.

While Commander of a small sloop he was remarkably active in destroying the enemies privateers, and after chasing into Cherbourgh a French ship of superior force, he cut it out from that harbour under a continual fire from the batteries. For this action he was advanced to the command of the Boston Man of War, stationed in New England, but before he could take possession of that ship was engaged at the request of Admiral Knowles in the expedition against Port Louis on board the Elizabeth which began the attack. He behaved with uncommon presence of mind in the heat of battle, where the family and country were at once deprived of a great honour and ornament to them both.

He was in every relation of private life most amiable, in all that concerned his country truly great and completed his course of life and glory in the 28th year of his age. He was second son of Sir Richard Cust, Baronet, by Anne Brownlowe, sister of The Right Honourable Lord Viscount Tyrconnel, who places this as a testimony of his great affection for his nephew and concern for so public a loss.
