HALE MAGNA AND HALE PARVA WAR MEMORIALS

The memorials are to be found within the Church of St John the Baptist, Church Street, Great Hale. The memorial takes the form of t wo marble tablets commemorating those lost in World War 1 and World War 2. The tbalet at the top is made of white marble set within a broad, red speckled, marble frame commemorating the dead of World War 1. Directly beneath it is a smaller white marble tablet with the names of those who died in World War 2. All the Inscriptions and names, on both tablets, are in black. The initial uneling was at Lent 1921 and was attened by F McKenzie, the Vicar, G. H. Harris and H Shaw, the Churchwardens, and parishioners and local dignitaries. There are sixteen names listed in total, thirteen for World War and three for World War 2. The names here have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of reading and research.

GARNER	William	Possibly Private 12723. 7th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 21st October 1915, aged 24 years. Son of John William and Martha Garner of Fen Farm, Stainfield, Lincs. Born Wellingore, enlisted Boston and resident Bassingham, Lincs. Commemorated HOP STORE CEMETERY. Plot I. Row B. Grave 4. See also Great Hale
GARRILL	Fred	Private 13530. 6th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 9th August 1915, aged 18 years. Son of William and Sarah Garrill of Great Hale Fen, Lincs. Born Sleaford, enlisted Spilsby and resident Heckington, Lincs. Commemorated HELLES MEMORIAL. Panel 44 to 46. See also Great Hale
GRAY	Hugh	Private 21631. 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 21st November 1919, aged 23 years. Son of Tom and Mary Gray of The Laurels, Great Hale, Lincs. Commemorated GREAT HALE CEMETERY.
HESSELL	Walter	Private 5410, 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Killed in action at Ypres 29 October 1914. Born Great Hale, Lincolnshire, resident Hammersmith, Middlesex, enlisted Sleaford. Originally attested 8 February 1904 in Sleaford, aged 19 years 7 months. Baptised 28 September 1884 in Great Hale, son of JohnTHompson and Matilda Hessell. In the 1891 census he was aged 6, born Great Hale, Lincolshire, son of John T and Matilda Hessell, resident Great Hale, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 16, born Great Hale, Lincolshire, an Ordinary Agricultural Labourer, son of John and Matilda Hessell, resident Hale Magna, Great Hale, Sleaford, Lincolnshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Great Hale, Lincolnshire, a Police Constable boarding at Little Bytham Grantham, Little Bytham, Lincolnshire. He married in Fulham Registration District, London, in the January to March Quarter 1912, either Norah M Smith or Eliza A Turner. Religious denomination Church of England. He appears to have been a Reservist who became a Policeman in London and was recalled to service at the start of the war. No known grave. KEY	George	Private 32416, 2nd Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Killed in action 2 June 1917. Aged 25. Born Great Hale, Lincolshire, resident Shearbridge, Yorkshire, enlisted Bradford, Yorkshire. Son of Francis and Mary Ann Key, of Great Hale, Sleaford, Lincs; brother opf William (below); husband of Hilda Key, of 12, Rink Terrace, Mount St., Batley, Yorks. KEY	William	Lance Corporal 13518, 188th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) formerlu S4/158004, Royal Army Service Corps. Killed in action 26 October 1917. Aged 23. Born Great Hale, Lincolnshire, resident Heckington, Lincolnshire, enlisted Plumstead. Son of Francis and Mary Ann Key, of Great Hale, Heckington, Sleaford, Lincs; brother of George (above). SHAW	Ashbourne Delanoy	Military Medal. Sergeant 800060. C Bty, 84th Bde, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 5th October 1917, aged 31 years. Son of Robert and Annie Shaw of Swineshead, husband of Mrs G.M Shaw of Great Hale Vicarage, Lincs. Born Swineshead and enlisted Boston, Lincs. Commemorated ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY. XXVII.F.14. WARD	John William	Corporal 15220. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 4th October 1917, aged 27 years. Son of Speed and Hannah Ward of Little Hale, Lincs. WOODCOCK	George Henry	Private 136140. 35th Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 23048 South Staffordshire Regiment. Died of wounds 10th November 1918. Husband of Letty Woodcock of East Heckington, Lincs. Born Caythorpe and enlisted Lincoln, Lincs. Commemorated TERLINCTHUN BRITISH CEMETERY, Wimille. X.D.5.
WOODS	Charles	Private 45622, 2nd Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). Killed in action 11 October 1918. Born Sleaford, Lincs and enlisted Derby, Derbyshire. Married Gertie Louisa Ride Smith on 1 March 1903, they had the following children, Charles Richard, Frederick William, Doris Maud, Elsie May, Constance Evelyn, and Elizabeth Gwendoline Woods; all born in Derby with Elizabeth's address at birth being 24, Stanhope Street, Derby. In 1921 Gertie, Doris, Elsie, Connie and Elizabeth are still at that address. Also in the house is David Keery her future husband. Gertie Louisa Woods is named on the World War 1 pension ledger. WOODS	William	Private 24168, 1st Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers formerly 23441, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment). Killed in action 1 July 1916. Born Old Sawley, enlisted Derby. Married Elizabeth Freeman in 1903 and parents Henry Freeman/Mary Hannah Johnson. William is on the 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census. The children were William born prior to marriage in 1902,Eliza Rose Woods, John Henry Woods, Albert Woods and Mary Woods. His wife Elizabeth died later that year. The pension Ledgers show Henry Freeman as the guardian of the children and they are together on the 1921 census. Buried in REDAN RIDGE CEMETERY NO.2, BEAUMONT-HAMEL, Somme, France. Row C. Grave 23.
