HAXEY AND WESTWOODSIDE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Michael Peck 2007

The memorial covers both Haxey and Westwoodside and can be found at the village crossroads in Haxey. The memorial depicts the figure of a soldier with his head bowed and his rifle reversed standing on a rectangular plinth with a three stepped base, the whole surrounded by railings. There are 39 names commmeorated for World War 1 and 5 for World War 2. The memorial was privately sponsored and unveiled by Lady Iliffe 13th July 1928. The sculptors were Messrs. Beattie & Co., the sponsor Mr Henry Gilding. orignally the war memorial was a cross erected in the churchyard in Haxey which went against the wishes of a local worthy, Henry Gilding, who wanted a non-sectarian memorial. He eventually paid for a new memorial to be erected at the crossroads where the village pond once was.
