The war village memorial is to be found in the grounds of St Peter's Church, Humberston. The memorial takes the for of a Celtic Cross mounted on a two-stepped plinth all standing on a square base, either side of the memorial are two flower vases the the whole is encircled by a low stone wall on a stone base. There are 9 names for World War 1 and 8 for World War 2.

Frank Norman

Sergeant 801040. B Bty, 295th Bde, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 1st April 1918. Born 1885 in Luton, Beds, enlisted Grimsby, Lincs. Married Caroline Robinson in 1908 in Lincolnshire and had a son who was born in Humberston, Lincolnshire. Commemorated DOULLENS COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION No: Section 1. Plot VI. Row F. Grave 12.


James George

Deck Hand 308DA. Royal Naval reserve. HM Trawler Marion. Died 23rd February 1918, aged 27 years. Son of (the late) James George and Eliza Jane Fisk of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Commemorated CHATHAM NAVAL MEMORIAL. 30.


Alfred Denzil

2nd Lieutenant. 14th Battalion, The Kings (Liverpool Regiment). Died 17th (15th on memorial) September 1916. Commemorated PIETA MILITARY CEMETERY. C.XIII.3.


Eric Arthur Milner

Private 1335, Lancashire yeomanery then Second Lieutenant, machester Regiment. Killed in action 8 March 1916. Served in France before going to Mesopotamia. Son of Humberston vicar, Reverend Frederick J. Lane, and his wife, Hannah. No known grave. Commemorated on Basra memorial, Iraq.



Private 1142. 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 1st July 1916, aged 31 years. Son of William Youhill and Sarah Elizabeth Parker of Humberston, Lincs. Born Humberston, enlisted Grimsby and resident Goxhill, Lincs. Commemorated SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No: 2. XXXV.A.15.



Memorial states died 25th January 1918. Only Fred Russell that date is Private 1728. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 25th January 1918. Son of Mrs Mary Russell of 5 Cambridge Street, Cleethorpes, Lincs. Born Binbrook, enlisted Grimsby and resident Cleethorpes, Lincs. Commemorated FINS NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Sorel-Le-Grand. IV.A.1.



Memorial states died 22nd June 1916. Only Eric Shaw that date is Private 5617. 20th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. Killed in action 22nd June 1916. Son of Mr J Shaw of High Street, Nafferton, Yorks. Born Driffield, Yorks, enlisted Manchester, and resident Preston, Lancs. Commemorated GORRE BRITISH AND INDIAN CEMETERY. II.C.4.

Albert Edward Samuel Charles Robert

Lieutenant. Royal Horse Guards (Blues). Died of wounds 19th May 1915, aged 20 years. Commemorated MOULSOE (St Mary) CHURCHYARD.

This monument was erected by the parishioners of Humberston
in conjunction with the parents and friends of the departed.
The parish war records are preserved in a book which is kept in the church



Possibly Thomas Charnley Cook. Trooper 7910762. 2nd Royal Gloucestershire Hussars, Royal Armoured Corps. Died 2nd June 1942, aged 22 years. Son of Thomas Charnley and Ellen Jane Cook of Saxby All Saints, Lincs. Commemorated ALAMEIN MEMORIAL. Column 26.

Possibly Herbert Ronald Edwards. Craftsman 4805912. Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Died 22nd May 1944, aged 28 years. Husband of Dorothy Irene Edwards of Nunsthorpe, Lincs. Commemorated GRIMSBY (Scartho Road) CEMETERY. Sec 116. Row H. Grave 13.



Sergeant 972626. 423 Squadron, Royal Air Force VR. Died 4th August 1943, aged 23 years. Son of Lionel and Anna Elizabeth Gossop of Humberston, Lincs. Commemorated RUNNYMEDE MEMORIAL. Panel 151.



2nd Engineer Officer. Merchant Navy. SS Empire Stevenson (South Shields). Died 13th September 1942, aged 48 years. Son of Alfred and Sarah Rose Joel, husband of Anne Christine Joel of Humberston, Lincs. Commemorated TOWER HILL MEMORIAL. Panel 45.



Possibly Horace Rowntree. Sergeant 797687. 11th (Honourable Artillery Coy) Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery. Died 29th May 1942, aged 29 years. Son of William and Florence Rowntree, husband of Phyllis Rowntree of Barton on Humber, Lincs. Commemorated KNIGHTSBRIDGE WAR CEMETERY, Acroma. 11.C.3.



Possibly Jack Showler. Private 4805052. 4th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 24th December 1944, aged 27 years. Son of Walter and Mary Jane Showler of Barton on Humber, Lincs. Commemorated JONKERBOS WAR CEMETERY. 2.F.8.



Possibly Edwin C Townsend. Driver 161917. Royal Army Service Corps. Died 17th September 1943, aged 32 years. Son of William Edward and Emma Townsend, husband of Ivy Townsend of Cleethorpes, Lincs. Commemorated MEDJEZ-EL-BAB WAR CEMETERY. 18.D.15.


John Desmond

Guardsman 2660563. 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Died between 23rd and 25th December 1942, aged 26 years. Son of Charles E and Florence M Warwick of Coventry. Husband of Vera Warwick of Humberston, Lincs. Commemorated MEDJEZ-EL-BAB WAR CEMETERY. 3.C.13.
