LUDBOROUGH WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial is located in the churchyard overlooking the road at St Mary's Church, Station Road, Ludborough. It takes the form of a granite cross with a plinth and two stepped base mounted on a concrete foundation, in the centre of the cross are the letters IHS with the main inscription is on the front face and the names of the fallen incised, along with their dates of death, on two of the other faces. There are thirteen names listed for World War 1 and none from the village for World War 2 athough there is a Roll of Honour to the airmen killed in crashes within the parish.

ATKINSON William

Private DM2/168795, 905th M.T. Coy., Army Service Corps. Died at sea 4 May 1917, age 38, one of 412 people killed when troopship Transylvania was torpedoed in the Gulf of Genoa by German submarine U-63 while on voyage from Marseille to Alexandria. Born 1879 Holton-le-Clay, Lincs, bpt 15.1.1880 Humberston, Lincs, son of Joseph William and Isabel (née Keyworth) Atkinson of Ludborough. Pre-war occupation farmer. Commemorated at Savona Memorial, Italy.

BLADES George Job
Private 40148, 1st Bn. Royal Irish Fusiliers (Previously 50639, Notts & Derby Regt). Killed in action 21 March 1918, age 23. Born Dec 1895, bpt 3.3.1895 Cockerington St Mary, son of Arthur and Mary Ann (née Spendlow) Blades, of Eleven Greens, South Cockerington, Louth, Lincs. Attested 12 Jan 1916 Louth. Pre-war occupation waggoner. Commemorated at Panel 76 and 77, Pozières Memorial, France.
BUCKNALL Charles Samuel

Private 39754, 1st Bn. Gloucestershire Regiment. Killed in action 13 June 1918. Born 4 May 1886, bpt 30 May 1886 Swallow, Lincs, son of Samuel & Mary Elizabeth Bucknall. Pre-war occupation draper's assistant. Buried in Grave III. C. 21, Noeux-Les-Mines Communal Cemetery Extension, France.

Lance Corporal 18955, 12th Bn. Cheshire Regiment. Died of wounds 29 October 1916, age 32. Born 22 Jul 1884, bpt 21 Sep 1884, Ludborough, son of Frederick William and Esther (née Long) Burnett of Ludborough. Pre-war occupation gardener. Buried in Grave D709, Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece
EAST Albert
(on memorial) KNAPTON (real name) Private Albert KNAPTON 241739, 2nd/5th Bn. Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment). Killed in action 3 May 1917, age 21. Born 1895 South Cockerington, Lincs, nephew of Richard and Mary Jane (née Knapton) East of Church Lane, Habrough, Lincs who raised him. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Enlisted at Louth. Commemorated at Bay 6, Arras Memorial, France.
HAYLETT George
Private 241248 (prev 4348), 1st/5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 23 September 1918. Born 1895 Conisholme, Lincs, son of John & Hannah Elizabeth (née Thornton) Haylett. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Buried in Grave II.C 8, Brie British Cemetery, France
LAMMING Archer
Private 11680, 8th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1915, age 20. Born 1895 Utterby, Lincs, son of Walkerley & Alice (née Archer) Lamming, of Utterby Hall Gatehouse, North Thoresby, Lincs. Pre-war occupation railway porter. Commemorated at Panel 31 to 34, Loos Memorial, France.
LARTER Albert John
Private 40491, 7th Bn. Norfolk Regiment. Died of wounds 27 April 1917, age 21. Born 1896, bpt 27.3.1896 Binbrook, Lincs, son of William & Mary Anne (née Harmer) Larter of Ludborough. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Buried in Grave IV H 6, Duisans British Cemetery, Etrun, France.
LEWIS Frank
Private 1515, 2nd/5th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 26 September 1917. Born 12 Jun 1897, bpt 28 Aug 1897 Holton Le Clay, son of Eli & Betsy (née Wilkinson) Lewis. Pre-war occupation farm labourer. Commemorated at Panel 35 to 37, Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium.
NESBIT Cuthbert William
Private 1913, 8th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 11 April 1918, age 22. Born 1895, bpt 25 Dec 1895, Aldborough, Norfolk, son of the Rev. John William and Hannah (née Widdowson) of Ludborough. Had been recommended for a Commission. Buried in Grave VI. B. 7, Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No.1, France.
NICHOLSON Charles
Private 16445, 2nd Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 1 July 1916, age 36. Born 1880 North Thoresby, Lincs, son of Allan & Susanna (née Rowley) Nicholson. Husband of Maude Mary (née Sands) Nicholson of 16 Chequergate, Louth, Lincs, father of Joyce Evelyn, George Allen, Susanna & Elsie May Nicholson. Pre-war occupation farm cowman. Commemorated at Pier and Face 1 C, Thiepval Memorial, France.
SMITH Ben
Private 17992, 6th Bn. Lincolnshire Regiment. Died of wounds 6 October 1917, age 19. Born 1898 Yarburgh, Louth, son of John Wilson and Mary Ann (née Kettlewell) Smith, of Yarburgh, Louth. Buried in Grave VII G 8, Dozinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.
WALSHAM Arthur
Private 2628, 1st/8th Bn. Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment). Killed in action 14 August 1915, age 28. Born 19 Dec 1887, Horncastle., son of Harriett Walsham. Nephew of Jane (née Walsham) Starmer of Chapel Lane, Ludborough. Enlisted Newark, Sept 1914. Pre-war occupation foundry labourer. Commemorated at Panel 41, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, Belgium.

A framed and glazed, calligraphic, document on a wall commemorates thirteen aircrew killed in World War 2 in crashes within the parish.
