SNITTERBY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Snitterby war memorial stands in the grounds of St Nicholas Church and takes the form of a stone column mounted on a plinth on a stone base with the inscription on the plinth. There are 8 names for World War 1 and none for World War 2. The memorial is currently suffering from subsidence. The memorial was dedicated and unveiled on 12th June 1920. Details to be found in the Lincolnshire Star 18th June 1920.

Private 14016. 3rd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. Killed in action 2nd January 1916. Born Little Ponton, enlisted Lincoln and resident Kirton in Lindsey, Lincs. Commemorated AUBERS RIDGE BRITISH CEMETERY, Aubers. VII.B.12.

Private 27974. 9th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, formerly 49420 Manchester Regiment. Killed in action 10th August 1917. Born Horncastle, Lincs and enlisted Manchester, Lancashire. Commemorated YPRES (Menin Gate) MEMORIAL. Panel 41 and 43.

Private 260648. 1st Squadron, Middlesex Hussars. Killed in action 27th October 1917 in Egypt. Enlisted Chelsea, Middlesex and resident Kirton in Lindsey, Lincs. Commemorated BEERSHEBA WAR CEMETERY. Q.41.

Private 1259. 10th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 28th April 1917, aged 25 years. Son of Joseph and M Jane Jacklin of North Owersby, Lincs. Born North Kelsey, enlisted Grimsby and resident Howsham, Lincs. Commemorated ROEUX BRITISH CEMETERY. D.48.

Possibly William Jacklin. Memorial states died 16th December 1917 and only one this date is Gunner 232909. Royal Field Artillery. Killed in action above date. Enlisted and resident Sheffield, Yorks. Commemorated PERTH CEMETERY (China Wall). Garter Point Cem. Mem 30.

Private 40138. E Coy, Machine Gun Corps (Heavy Branch/Tank Corps) Died at home 28th December 1916, aged 21 years. Third son of William and Elizabeth Kirby of Snitterby Manor, Snitterby, Lincs. Born Snitterby and enlisted Scunthorpe, Lincs. Commemorated SNITTERBY (St Nicholas) CHURCHYARD.
