SUTTON BRIDGE WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Michael Peck 2008

The Sutton Bridge war memorial stands in the churchyard of St Matthew's Church to the west of the north porch in Bridge Road, Sutton Bridge. It takes the form of a four-stepped octagonal base surmounted by an octagonal plinth, tapering shaft and Latin cross with IHS engraved on the intersection of the arms, the cross being of Portland stone. The names are carved and infilled in black paint; those from the First World War are on the sides of plinth; those from the Second World War are on the top two steps. There are 48 names listed for World War 1 and 23 for World War 2.

Sutton Bridge was a Royal Air Force station during the Second World War and there was a prisoner-of-war camp at Spalding. Within the church is a wooden board which names all those airmen who served at the base and died.

Most of the Second World War burials are in a plot in the south-eastern corner of the churchyard, the rest are scattered in various parts of the churchyard. Sutton Bridge (St Matthew) Churchyard contains three Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 54 from the Second. There are also four war graves of other nationalities.
