PRIVATE SALTER
CIRCUMSTANCES UNDER WHICH HE
IS POSTED AS MISSING

Writing to Mrs Salter, of 5, Brownlow-road, West Ealing, a Captain and Adjutant of the Middlesex Regiment gives and outline of the circumstances under which her husband, Private W. E. Salter, was reported as missing just a short time ago.

The particulars furnished in the the letter have been supllied in response to a communication addressed by Mrs. Salter to her husband's commanding officer. Learning from a brother, who is serving in another battalion of the Middlesex, that Private Salter had been posted “missing, believed killed,” Mrs Salter at once sought to obtain further news, and, in answer to a request for fuller information, the following statement has come to hand: “Your husband was at battalion headquarters acting as orderly to the commanding officer during a battle. Our headquarters were, unfortunately, blown in by a shell, after which no trace of your husband could be found.”

Private Salter joined up at the time of the outbreak of war—while the men of the 8th Middlesex were stationed at Sittingbourne—and for six months of the three years his military service record covered at Gibraltar. Formerly of Dudley-road, Southall, he was for some time employed at the Southall Gas Works, and was last year made the recipient of a certificate of recommendation, awarded in recognition of his distinguished conduct.
