CWMCARVAN WW1 MEMORIAL

The memorial takes the form of a restored Wheel Cross with a five-stepped base, plinth and shaft with the dedicatory inscription on the side of the plinth standing outside St Catwgs Church, Cwmcarvan. The memorial was unveiled in 1921.

DRUMMOND

Spencer Heneage
Captain, 7th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. Killed in action 30 July 1915. Aged 31. Born 12 August 1884 in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. Son of Capt. Algernon Heneage Drummond, of Preston House, Colebrook St., Winchester; husband of Margaret Elizabeth Drummond. In the 1891 census he was aged 6, born Buckinghamshire, son of Algernon Heneage and Barbara Drummond, of Maltmans Green, Bull Lane, Chalfont St Peter, Amersham, Buckinghamshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 16, a School Boy, boarder at Eton College, resident Barns Pools Terrace, Eton, Buckinghamshire. Left Eton College in 1902. In the 1911 census he was aged 26, born Gerrard's Cross, Buckinghamshire, unmarried, in the Army, a Lieutenant, 2nd Battalion, Rifle Brigade, billeted ar Fort William, Calcutta, India. Promoted Lieutenant 1905, posted to 2nd Battalion 16 October 1906, served in Aden 17 March 1905 to 1 January 1906. Educated Eton. Height 5 feet 9½ inches. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 46 - 48 and 50.

EDWARDS

William John
Acting Sergeant 10077, 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers. Killed in action 1 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme. Born Hereford, enlisted Brecon. In the 1911 census a William Edwards, was aged 26, born Tregare, Monmouth, unmarried, son of Amos and Eliza Edwards, a Farmer's son assisting his father, resident with his [parents and siblings at Lower House, Cwmcarvan, Monmouthshire. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 4 A.

WALTERS

Lancelot John Barrington

Lieutenant, H.M.S. "Partridge", Royal Navy. Lost when his ship was sunk in action 12 December 1917. Aged 22. Son of the Rev. Charles Barrington Walters and Selina H. P. Walters (nee Massy Beresford), of Sywell Rectory, Northampton. Born 19 January 1895, and baptised 2 February 1895, at Castle Bromwich, Warwickshire. Enlisted in Royal Navy 15 January 1908, midshipman 15 May 1903, 15 May 1915 Acting Sub-Lieutenant, 15 January 1916 ub Lieutenant, 15 July 1917 Acting Lieutenant. Assigned H.M.S. Partidge 8 July 1917, made permanent assignment 4 September 1917. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 24.

Also commemorated in the form of a stained glass window within St Catwgs Church, Cwmcarvan and further commemorated on the War Memorial in Stoke Climsland, Cornwall and on wall monument and plaque in Stoke Climsland Parish Church.

James Edmund
Private 8810, 2nd Battalion, Prince of Wales's Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment). Killed in action 6 October 1914. Aged 24. Born Owmearn (sic), Monmouthshire, resident Caerllan, Monmouthshire, enlisted Monmouth. Son of E. H. and Jessie Winter, of Caer Llan Lodge, Lydart, Chepstow, Mon. In the 1891 census he was under 1 year of age, son of Edmund H and Jessie Winter, born Monmouthshire, resident Caerllan, Graigydorth, Cwmcarvan, Monmouth, Monmouthshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 10, born Cwmcarvon (sic), Monmouthsire, attending school, resident Caerlan Lodge, Cwmcarvan, Monmouth, Monmouthshire. No known grave. Commemorated on LA FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE MEMORIAL, Seine-et-Marne, France.
