BESTHORPE WAR MEMORIAL

The Besthorpe war memorial stands in the local churchyard and takes the form of a Celtic style wheel cross with tapering shaft mounted on a plinth with a two-stepped base. The inscription is hard to read.

1914-1918

BROWN

Edward

Private 202950 Edward Brown originally enlisted as 5990 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 1/4th East Yorkshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 16th November 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 2 C. and on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the husband of Mrs. E. Brown.

BUTCHER

William Clarance

Corporal 15386 William Clarance Butcher was born in Thetford c1892. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 15th September 1916 aged ~24. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1 C and 1 D. and on both the Besthorpe and Attleborough War Memorials.

CHATTERIS

Alfred Charles

Sapper 205761 Alfred Charles Chatteris was born in c1880 and enlisted in the Royal Engineers in Lowestoft. He served at Home and died of exposure whilst serving in the Irish Sea on 10th May 1917 aged 37. He is buried at Kirk Patrick (Holy Trinity) Churchyard Grave 6M and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Alfred Charles and Elizabeth Chatteriss, of Lowestoft; husband of Martha Florence Louisa Chatteriss, of Silver Street, Besthorpe.

CLARKE

Charles John

Private 1717 Charles John Clarke was born in Attleborough c1892. He enlisted in the Suffolk Yeomanry (Duke or York's Own Loyal Suffolk Hussars) in Woodbridge. He served in Malta where he died of dysentry in hospital on 30th November 1915 aged 23. He is buried at Pieta Military Cemetery D. X. 1 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Charles and Annis Clarke, of The Limes, Besthorpe and was a resident of Attleborough.

DOWNES

Gordon Robert

Gunner 234812 Gordon Robert Downes was born in Hackford c1896. He enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 22nd August 1918 aged 22. He is buried at Vis-En-Artois Memorial Panel 3 and 4 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Robert and Mary Ann Downes, of Decoy Farm, Besthorpe.

EAGLING

Arthur Walter

Private 49484 Arthur Walter Eagling was born in c1899 and enlisted in the East Surrey Regiment in Norwich. He served at Home and died on 25th January 1919 aged 19. He is buried at Besthorpe (All Saints) Churchyard and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Arthur and Agnes Eagling, of Besthorpe.

EAGLING

Edward John

Private 7806 Edward John Eagling was born in Besthorpe c1885. He enlisted in the 1st Lincolnshire Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 8th September 1914. He is buried at Bezu-Le-Guery Communal Cemetery Special Memorial 5 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. J. Eagling, of Norwich Rd., Besthorpe and a resident of Besthorpe.

EASTELL

Wallace Harry

Private 235725 Wallace Harry Eastell was born in Attleborough c1898. He originally enlisted as 2704 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich, then later transferred to the 13th York and Lancaster Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 12th April 1918 aged 20. He is remembered on the Ploegsteert Memorial Panel 8 and on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Harry Mark Eastell, of Norwich Road., Besthorpe and a resident of Attleborough.

EASTOLL

Albert

Private 6810 Albert Eastoll was born in Besthorpe c1877. He originally enlisted as 30460 in the Bedfordshire Regiment in Cromer then later transferred to the 1st Cambridgeshire. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 3rd December 1916 aged 39. He is buried at Duhallow A.D.S. Cemetery Grave VII. D. 12 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Robert and Sarah Eastoll, of Besthorpe; husband of Alice Eastoll, of 35, Silvergate, Blickling, Aylsham.

EASTOLL

Frederick George

Private 3/10841 Frederick George Eastoll was born in Besthorpe c1890. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 27th July 1916 aged 26. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1 C and 1 D. and on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the Husband of the late Alice Eastoll.

HOUCHEN

Harry Arthur

Private 24912 Harry Arthur Houchen was born in Great Ellingham c1886. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and died of Wounds on 5th November 1917 aged 31. He is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen Grave P. III. L. 3B and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Thomas Walter and Eliza Houchen, of 6, Orchard Rd., Kelvedon, Essex. He was a native of Besthorpe.

LONG

Arthur George

Private G/20155 Arthur George Long was born in Long Stratton c1893. He originally enlisted as 26434 in the Suffolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 2nd Royal West Surrey Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 14th July 1917 aged 24. He is buried at Croisilles British Cemetery Grave I. D. 1 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of George W. and Eliza Ellen Long, of Burfield Hall Farm, Wymondham and was a resident of Attleborough.

LONG

George Henry

Private 50665 George Henry Long was born in Long Stratton c1895. He originally enlisted as 27324 Bedfordshire Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 11th Cheshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 13th August 1917 aged 22. He is remembered on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial Panel 19-22 and the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of George W. and Eliza Ellen Long, of Burfield Farm Cottages, Wymondham and was a resident of Attleborough.

STANDLEY

Herbert

Private 11877 Herbert Standley enlisted in the Welsh Regiment. He died on 18th February 1918 aged 31. He is buried at Pontnewydd (Holy Trinity) Churchyard Grave B. 128 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of John William and Emma Standley, of Silver St., Besthorpe.

SIDER

Edward Charles

Private G/15275 Edward Charles Sider was born in Besthorpe c1896. He originally enlisted as 14338 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 8th Royal West Surrey Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 21st August 1916 aged 21. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 5 D and 6 D. and on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sider, of Silver Street, Besthorpe where he was a resident.

WOODGATE

Frederick George

Lance Corporal 3/6943 Frederick George Woodgate was born in Bungay c1893. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Old Buckenham. He served in France & Flanders and died of Wounds on 6th June 1916 aged 24. He is buried at Habarcq Communal Cemetery Extension I. G. 3 and is remembered on the Besthorpe War Memorial. He was the son of James and Martha Woodgate, of Silver Street, Besthorpe; husband of Alice Woodgate, of 46, Gildersome Street, Woolwich Common, London.
