On a brass plaque on the wall behind the cross is the following inscription: 

THIS CROSS OF SACRIFICE
THE FIRST TO BE ERECTED AFTER THE 1939- 1945 WAR
WAS UNVEILED BY HIS MAJESTY KING GEORGE THE SIXTH
ON THE FOURTEENTH DAY OF JULY 1946.
