The Great Ellingham war memorial is part of St James' Church clock tower, Church Street, Great Ellingham, and takes the form of a dedicatory stone tablet. There are 16 names listed for World War 1. Within the church is a window shaped alcove that contains a further memorial for World War 1 and World War 2; this takes the form of a varnished oak board with moulded frame and central vertical division below which is a varnished oak shelf; at the top is a square pediment bearing a shield with a Coat of Arms and the dedication; the inscription is painted in white. This memorial has the same number of names for World War 1 plus six names for World War 2.

BARHAM

Ernest James

[Listed as E S BARHAM on interior memorial] Private 18218 Ernest James Barham was born in Rockland All Saints 1879. He enlisted in the 1st/5th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in Palestine and was killed in action on 2nd November 1917 aged 24. He is buried at Gaza War Cemetery Grave XXIV. B. 10 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial.

BEALES

Alfred Henry

Private 242535 Alfred Henry Beales was born in Little Ellingham c1887. He enlisted in the 1st/5th Norfolk Regiment in Attleborough. He served in Palestine and died on 19th April 1917 aged 30. He is remembered on the Jerusalem Memorial Panels 12 to 15 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial.

BILVERSTONE

Charles Frederick

Sergeant 14254 Charles Frederick Bilverstone was born in Little Cressingham c1885. He originally enlisted as 7894 in the Yorkshire Light Infantry in Norwich then later transferred to the 182nd Company Machine Gun Corps. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 8th August 1916 aged 31. He is remembered on the Loos Memorial Panel 136 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Emma Agnes Bilverstone and father of Edna, and an employee of Gaymers Cider Attleborough.

FOX

Albert Edgar

Private 15692 Albert Edgar Fox was born in Little Ellingham c1892. He enlisted in the 8th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 1st July 1916 aged 24. He is buried at Carnoy Military Cemetery Grave U. 36 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial.

GROOM

Arthur James

Private 68959 Arthur James Groom was born in Great Ellingham c1898. He originally enlisted as 39274 in the Royal West Surrey Regiment in Norwich on 28th December 1916 then later transferred to the 8th Royal Fusiliers. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 20th November 1917 aged 19. He is remembered on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval Panel 3 and 4 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of James and Mary Groom, of Drapers' Hill, Great Ellingham and was a resident of Great Ellingham.

Arthur

[Also listed as HALLS] Private 18601 Arthur Hall(s) was born in Great Ellingham c1891. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 15ht September 1916 aged 25. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of the late Charles and Rebecca Halls.

HANNAN

Edward William Joseph

Petty Officer Stoker 235864 Edward William Joseph Hannan was born in Wandsworth on 24th February 1890 and enlisted in the Royal Navy. He served on HMS Black Prince which was sunk in Battle of Jutland on 31st May 1916. He is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial Ref.16 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial.

HOY

Sidney

Private 18217 Sidney Hoy was born in Great Ellingham c1893. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and died of wounds on 18th October 1918 aged 25. He is buried at St. Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen Grave S. II. M. 11 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. J. Hoy, of Watton Road, Great Ellingham.

LEVERETT

Henry

Private G/51032 Henry Leverett was born in Hingham. He enlisted in the 11th Duke of Cambridge's Own Middlesex Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 12th May 1917. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial Bay 7 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was a resident of Attleborough.

LINCOLN

John

Private 8276 John Lincoln was born in Biggleswade. He enlisted in the 2nd Norfolk Regiment in Biggleswade. He served in Mesopotamia and died on 15th December 1916. He is buried at Haidar Pasha Cemetery Grave I. C. 17 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial.

Private 29278 Arthur Macro originally enlisted as 27350 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 2nd/7th Warwickshire. He served in France & Flanders and was taken prisoner of war when he died on 6th June 1918 aged 23. He is buried at Hamburg Cemetery Grave V. B. 5 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the husband of Emily Ethel Macro, of Long Street, Great Ellingham and was a resident of Great Ellingham.

REEDER

John Joseph

Private 22891 John Joseph Reeder was born in Great Ellingham c1892. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Attleborough. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 4th September 1916 aged 22. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Joseph and Elizabeth Reeder, of Long Street, Great Ellingham.

Edward Victor Patrick

Private 30540 Edward Victor Patrick Rosher was born in Norwich c1898. He enlisted in the 4th Bedfordshire Regiment in Watford. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 23rd April 1917 aged 19. He is remembered on the Arras Memorial Bay 5 and on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Rosher, of Great Ellingham.

SAUNDERS

Ernest E

Private 203167 Ernest E Saunders was born in c1892. He originally enlisted as 3829 in the Cambridgeshire Regiment in Cambridge then later transferred to the 11th Essex Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 28th May 1918 aged 26. He is buried at Voormezeele Enclosure No.3 Grave XIV. F. 1 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of Herbert Thomas and Clara Saunders, of Bow Street, Great Ellingham and a resident of Benwick, Cambridgeshire.

SAUNDERS

George Reginald

Private 42179 George Reginald Saunders was born in Great Ellingham c1899. He enlisted in the 2nd Bedfordshire Regiment in Newmarket on 11th June 1917. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 29th August 1918 aged 19. He is buried at Combles Communal Cemetery Extension Grave VI. F. 15 and is remembered on the Great Ellingham War Memorial. He was the son of George and Hannah Saunders of Long Street, Great Ellingham and a resident of Prickwillow Ely.

WILKINS

[Listed as George RIVETT on CWGC] Private G/7208, 1st Battalion, The Buffs (East Kent Regiment). Died 15 September 1916. Aged 29. Born and resident Gt. Ellingham, Norfolk, enlisted Attleborough, Norfolk. Son of William and Jane Wilkins, of Swamp Lane, Great Ellingham, Attleborough, Norfolk. In the 1891 census he is listed as George Rivitt Wilkins, aged 3, born Great Ellingham, son of Thomas William and Jane Wilkins, resident Ivy Cottage, Street, Great Ellingham, Wayland, Norfolk. In the 1901 census he was aged 13, born Norfolk, at school, son of William and Jane Wilkins, resident Town Green, Great Ellingham, Wayland, Norfolk. In the 1911 census he was aged 23, born Great Ellingham, Norfolk, a Fish Hawker, son of Thomas W and Jane Wilkins, resident Swamp Lane, Great Ellingham, Attleboro, Norfolk. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and Face 5 D.

*** Note *** The CWGC has him recorded by his middle name of RIVETT when the family name was actually WILKINS. His father intermixed his forenames being know as William and Thomas William.

Son of John and Nellie Giles, of Great Ellingham, Attleborough, Norfolk; husband of Ethel Margaret Giles, of Great Ellingham. Buried in CHUNGKAI WAR CEMETERY, Thailand. Plot 12. Row B. Grave 5.

Aircraftwoman 2nd Class 459538, Women's Auxiliary Air Force. Died 21 August 1943. Aged 24. Daughter of Bloomfield and Edith Hudson, of Great Ellingham. Buried in GREAT ELLINGHAM (ST. JAMES) CHURCHYARD, Norfolk.
