Compiled and Copyright © Transcribed Carolynn and Claire Langley; Researched by Lynda Smith
2004

The War Memorial is at the end of the High Street. It is hard to read as it is worn away in places. The memorial is in the form of a seven stepped base surmounted by a plinth, tapering shaft and wheel cross. There are carved inscriptions on the sides of the plinth and the upper steps containing the names of the fallen, the names of those from World War 2 are on the upper steps. There are shields halfway up the sides of the column. The memorial was unveiled by local dignatires on 29th May 1921. The architect was Mr. H. H. Palmer. There is another set of memorials in the church of St Andrew the Apostle.

Note: A story passed down from a school teacher at Cromer secondary modern school for many years who had nocticed an anomaly that interested him, namey that all the names were in alphabetical order except one, William Betts, which was added at a later date. The later additin, accordng to the schoolteacher, was because at the time of the memorials creation, he was considered unworthy. His crime? He had been born out of wedlock. Good enough to serve and die for his country, but not good enough to be honoured. As time passed, a campaign was started to have him added, and eventually the town relented. RIP Private Betts.
