LIMPENHOE WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial stands in the churchyard in Limpenhoe, Norfolk. It takes the form of a single step base surmounted by a plinth atop of which is a tapering shaft with a wheel cross at the top. The inscription is around the plinth and lists those who died in World War 1. Within the church is a plaque dedicated to a single man.

WEBB Walter Herbert
Aged 25. Private 20710. 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment, formerly 17206 Norfolk Regiment. Died at sea 13th August 1915. Son of (the late) Jonathan Walter and Pleasance Maria Webb of County Council Cottages, New Road, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. Born 1890 Southwood, enlisted Norwich and resident Southwood, Norfolk. Commemorated Helles Memorial. Panel 146 to 151 or 229 to 233.
SPOONER John William
Aged 39. Private 19401. Norfolk Regiment. Son of John Burton and Sarah Spooner. Husband of Ellen Selina Spooner (nee Beck) of Cantley, Norfolk. Attested Norfolk Regiment 29th May 1915 Norwich, Norfolk. Discharged ‘unlikely to become efficient soldier’ 25th June 1915. Possible civil death recorded 1916, aged 40 years. Commemoration unknown.
MAY Hylton Hayward
Aged 22. Private 27857. 9th Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 12th October 1916, aged 22 years. Son of Arthur William and Ann Elizabeth May. Born Limpenhoe, enlisted Norwich and resident Limpenhoe, Norfolk. Commemorated Thiepval Memorial. Pier and Face 10C. Also commemorated within the church on a brass plaque:

BARKER Frederick W N
Aged 15. Frederick Walter Nathaniel Barker. Boy 2nd Class J/62262, Royal Navy. HMS Ganges. Died of disease 14th March 1917. Son of Harry and Hannah Barker of Limpenhoe Common, Norfolk. Born 26th March 1901 Downham Market (as naval record, born Stradsett on census) and enlisted 3rd November 1916. Commemorated Limpenhoe (St Botolph) Churchyard.
POSTLE William Eric
Aged 25. Private 3/9987. 8th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Son of William and Louisa Postle. Husband of Jessie Gertrude Postle (nee Clarke, now wife of Alonzo Forder) of Limpenhoe Hill, Norfolk. Born 17th September 1891 Moulton St Mary, Norfolk. Enlisted Lowestoft, SFK 3rd September 1914 and discharged no longer physically fit for war service (Tuberculosis) 17th December 1915, died 9th July 1917. Commemorated Limpenhoe (St Botolph) Churchyard.
LOADES John Daniel
Aged 31. John Daniel Loades on 1888 birth record, variously spelled Loads/Loades thereafter. Private 51633. 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Died 17th July 1918. Son of Daniel and Ann Elizabeth Loades. Commemorated Terlincthun British Cemetery. VIII.D.5.
